C-N Eagles score five in first for 9-2 victory over Wingate

The Carson-Newman College Eagles used a five-run first to take a 9-2 victory over the Bulldogs of Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday night at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Eagles improve to 16-20 overall and 12-7 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 23-16 overall and 10-9 in the conference.

Sophomore outfielder Lucas Mohon (Glasgow, Ky.) was four-for-five with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Carson-Newman attack. Junior infielder Troy Zawadzki (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was two-for-four with a homer, two RBI and a run scored, while senior infielder Wesley Dozier (Cornelius, N.C.) had an RBI and two runs scored for the Eagles.

Redshirt sophomore first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) was two-for-four with a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack.

The Eagles got off to a hot start, plating five runs in the opening frame. The first run scored on a sacrifice fly, while Dozier followed with an RBI single. Senior outfielder Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) lined a two-run triple to right center, then scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0.

Zawadzki blasted a solo homer to left in the fourth to make push the lead to six. An RBI single from Zawadzki in the sixth made it 7-0. The Eagles added two more runs in the seventh, getting an RBI double from Mohon and an RBI single from senior outfielder Jonathan Dalton (Rutledge, Tenn.) to push the lead to nine.

Wingate got on the board in the ninth, when Yeung connected on his eighth homer of the year, a two-run shot to right to make it 9-2.

Senior right-hander Austin Bridgewater (Morristown, Tenn.) got the win, improving to 3-5 on the year. He went the distance, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven, throwing 120 pitches to notch his third complete game of the year. Senior left-hander Chris Nelson (Greenville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 3-3 on the year. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight.

The two teams meet again Saturday, playing a doubleheader with game one starting at 1 p.m.
