The eighth-ranked Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Wingate University 3-1 on day two of the 2011 Food Lion SAC Softball tournament Thursday afternoon. The Bears improve to 39-8 overall and take on Catawba College Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Bulldogs fall to 31-14 overall and will return to action Thursday, taking on Carson-Newman College at 2 p.m.

Junior catcher Sarah Atkins (Newport News, Va.) went one-for-three with two RBI to lead the Lenoir-Rhyne attack. Senior shortstop Kat Rivers (Royston, Ga.) and freshman infielder Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) each went one-for-three with a run scored, while freshman outfielder Haily Jarman (Wadesboro, N.C.) had an RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore outfielder Kasey Pendley (Marion, N.C.) went one-for-three with a run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Junior catcher Brittany Barrineau (Monroe, N.C.) drove in the lone run of the day for the Bulldogs.

Wingate got on the board first in the third. Pendley got it started with a lead-off single, then went to second on an error and third on a sacrifice. Barrineau drove her in with a sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0.

The Bulldogs held the 1-0 margin until the bottom of the sixth. A walk, error and fielder’s choice loaded the bases with no outs. The Bulldogs recorded the first out, forcing the runner at home. Jarman was then hit by a pitch, plating the first run to tie the contest at one. After another force out at home, Atkins delivered with a two-run single to give the Bears a two-run lead.
