Two homers, two shutouts, two victories for 'Dogs at Anderson

GAME ONE BOX SCORE         GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Anderson, S.C.----
Wingate University junior shortstop Maureen Sandidge (Venice, Fla.) hit a solo home run in both games to give the visiting Bulldogs two 1-0 South Atlantic Conference softball victories over Anderson (S.C.) University Wednesday afternoon at Smethers Field. Sandidge has five round-trippers this season.

The Sandidge home runs provided Wingate senior right-hander Allison Smith (Daleville, Va.) all the support she would need. A Capital One Academic All-America® nominee, Smith earned her 16th and 17th victories of the season. She scattered five hits in the opener and twirled a one-hitter in the nightcap. Smith has compiled 16 complete games during the 2011 campaign.

With one out in the fourth inning, Sandidge hit her first solo home run of the day. Smith worked out of a serious jam in the seventh to secure the triumph. Anderson junior designated player Amber Duncan (Matthews, N.C.) started the final frame with a double. One out later, junior outfielder Brooke Lucas (Rock Hill, S.C.) singled Duncan to third. Smith struck out sophomore outfielder Kayla Hipp (Anderson, S.C.) to end the contest.

Four Wingate players had one hit each in the opener, while five AU Trojans posted one safety each. Both teams left six runners on base. Bulldog junior catcher Brittany Barrineau (Monroe, N.C.) stroked a double for the visitors, matching Duncan’s seventh inning two-bagger.

Smith struck out five and walked one for the Bulldogs. Anderson senior pitcher Alex Waldroup (LaGrange, Ga.) took the loss for the hosts. She allowed one run on two hits, striking out three and walking two.

Game #2
Wingate 1, Anderson (S.C.) 0

Sandidge should purchase the 1993 movie Groundhog Day for her DVD collection, as she repeated her first-game heroics with a fourth-inning solo shot for the Bulldogs. The Venice High School product led off the fourth with her solo home run to give the visitors the much-needed sweep.

Smith was masterful, posting six strikeouts and only one walk to secure the victory. Anderson freshman outfielder Charlotte Sieber (Dacula, Ga.) led off the bottom of the first with a double to center field. Smith did not allow another hit.

Sandidge had two hits in the nightcap, the homer in the fourth and the single to lead off the second inning. Bulldog senior second baseman Gina Ager (Columbia, Md.) added a double for the visitors. Wingate left seven runners on base, while Anderson stranded two.

Anderson senior pitcher Casey Deer (Ulmer, S.C.) took the loss. Deer also pitched a complete game, striking out four and walking three. She scattered five hits and surrendered an earned run.

Wingate hosts SAC foe Brevard College Saturday at 1 p.m. Anderson visits number 11 Lenoir-Rhyne University Saturday at the same time.
