More strong pitching leads to second straight sweep for ‘Dogs

Wingate University senior right-hander Allison Smith (Daleville, Va.) notched her third consecutive shutout in game one, while collecting the save in game two to lead the Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep of the Tornados of Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference softball action Saturday afternoon. Wingate won 5-0 in game one, while winning the second game 5-1 to improve to 28-12 overall and 8-6 in the SAC. Brevard falls to 28-15 and 6-8 in the conference.

Game #1: Wingate 5, Brevard 0

Sophomore first baseman Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) was one-for-two with three RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Junior catcher Brittany Barrineau (Monroe, N.C.) was one-for-two with a double and a run scored, while junior shortstop Maureen Sandidge (Venice, Fla.) went two-for-three with an RBI and run scored.

Sandidge led off the second with a single. She would score when Loudermilt ripped an RBI single to center to make it 1-0. Barrineau started the fourth with a double. Her pinch runner would score when Loudermilt reached on an error. The final run of the inning scored on a passed ball, making it 3-0.

The Bulldogs added two more insurance runs in the fifth. Sandidge plated the first run with an RBI single. Loudermilt drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to five.

Smith went the distance to improve to 18-5 on the year. She allowed five hits (all singles) while striking out seven and walking one. Senior right-hander Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 16-8. She allowed three runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven.

Game #2: Wingate 5, Brevard 1

Sandidge was one-for-two, blasting her third homer of the week and driving in three to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Chavis went one-for-one with a double, two RBI and a run scored, while sophomore outfielder Kasey Pendley (Marion, N.C.) scored twice for the Bulldogs.

Freshman designated player Emily Boykin (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was one-for-three with an RBI to lead the Brevard offense. Junior catcher Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, Va.) was two-for-three with a run scored for the Tornados.

Wingate got on the board in the first without a hit. Pendley was hit by a pitch to start the inning, went to second on a wild pitch, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Chavis drove her home with a sacrifice fly.

Wingate added four runs in the fourth to push the lead to five. Pendley was hit by a pitch once again, then scored on an RBI double off the center field fence from Chavis. Barrineau walked, bringing Sandidge to the plate with two on and two outs. She lined her sixth homer of the season to left, a three-run shot to make it 5-0.

Brevard loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Boykin popped one right in front of home plate that would drop, allowing Mallory to score from third. Smith induced a pair of groundouts after that to retire the side without further damage.

Freshman right-hander Ashley Brown (Murrells Inlet, S.C.) got the win, improving to 6-4 on the year. She allowed one run on seven hits in five innings of work, striking out four. Smith notched her first save of the year, allowing one hit in two innings, striking out two. Freshman right-hander Alyssa Miller (Davie, Fla.) took the loss, falling to 12-7 on the year. She allowed five runs on three hits in six innings, striking out one and walking four.

Wingate returns to action Wednesday, traveling to Newberry for a 2 p.m. start. The Bulldogs have won seven of their last eight conference games, including four straight. The ‘Dogs return home Saturday, hosting Carson-Newman at 1 p.m.
