Wingate, N.C.----The Barton College men’s soccer team scored a pair of goals in less than a minute to break open a tie match midway through the second half, en route to a 4-2 victory over Wingate University in the season opener for both teams Thursday night. The host Bulldogs played a man down for the final 48 minutes and played two men down for the final 29 minutes.
Barton sophomore forward
Danilo Matos (Lauro de Freitas, Brazil) opened the scoring 12:54 into the first half, getting a nice feed from sophomore midfielder
Ricardo Oliveira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) behind the defense, finding the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Matos goal would complete the scoring in the opening frame. With three minutes left in the first half, Wingate junior midfielder
Fabricio Barancoski (Sao Paulo, Brazil) collided with the Barton goalkeeper, earning a red card and putting Wingate one man down.
The hosts tied the match 4:35 into the second half, when junior forward
Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) got behind the defense and netted his first goal of the year. Senior midfielder
Felippe Imperatriz (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had the assist on the play. Less than 12 minutes later, junior defender
Corey McCollom (Monroe, N.C.) received his second yellow card of the night and put Wingate two men down.
The match would remain tied until Barton sophomore midfielder
Archer Bane (Greenville, N.C.) fired one in on a rebound with 20 minutes remaining in regulation to put the visiting Bulldogs on top for good.
Barton added some insurance 46 seconds later, when sophomore midfielder
Erik Pajunk (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) broke up a pass in Wingate territory, chipping one over the head of the Wingate goalkeeper to push the lead to two.
The hosts would not go quietly, slicing the lead to one with 5:29 remaining. Freshman forward
Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) headed home a cross from senior midfielder
Tom Poole (Birmingham, England) to make the score 3-2.
Barton would add one final goal with under a minute remaining in the contest, when Pajunk found freshman forward
David Welsh (North Berwick, Scotland) behind the defense to make the final tally 4-2.
Barton held a 16-11 advantage in shots and a 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Barton senior goalkeeper
Brian Riesenberg (Fort Thomas, Ky.) notched five saves to secure the victory for the visiting Bulldogs. Junior
Julian Garcia (Flowery Branch, Ga.) had six saves for the hosts.
Wingate returns to action Saturday, traveling to Francis Marion University at 4 p.m. Barton hosts Lenoir-Rhyne University Saturday at 7 p.m.
