Catawba takes two at Wingate Saturday

Wingate, N.C.----The Catawba College Indians rallied for a 12-11 victory in game one, while adding a 5-2 win in the nightcap as Catawba swept a doubleheader over the host Bulldogs of Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Saturday at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Indians are 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 8-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
 
Game One: Catawba 12, Wingate 11
 
Catawba scored three in the top of the ninth, while cutting down the potential game-tying run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on a flyout to right to end the game. Senior infielder Brett Underwood (Greensboro, N.C.) went four-for-four with a double, RBI and run scored in game one. Senior catcher Greg Lawson (Charlotte, N.C.) had three hits including a homer, while scoring three runs. Sophomore infielder Chris Dula (Troutman, N.C.) and junior designated hitter Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, N.C.) also homered for the Indians, combining to drive in three and score three.
 
Redshirt junior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) was three-for-four with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) had a double, three RBI and a run scored. Freshman outfielder Thomas Spitz (Cutler Bay, Fla.) had two hits and three runs scored for the Bulldogs, while freshman catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.
 
Catawba jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Furr drove home the first run with an RBI groundout, while an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Keaton Hawks (Lexington, N.C.) pushed the lead to two. Wingate answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Spitz walked, stole second, then scored on an RBI single from senior infielder Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.).
 
A solo homer from Lawson in the second pushed the lead back to two. Dula started the third with a homer to make it 4-1. Lawson led off the fourth with a double, then scored on an RBI single from senior outfielder Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, N.C.) to put Catawba on top by four.
 
The Bulldogs had the answer, scoring five runs in the fourth to take the lead. Yeung started the frame with a double, then scored on Allison’s two-run single. Spitz followed with an RBI single, while a two-run double from McPherson gave Wingate its first lead of the day at 6-5.
 
Yeung walked to start the fifth, stole second, then scored on Clark’s RBI single to push Wingate’s lead to two. Yeung ripped another double in the sixth, driving home Karr while scoring on a Catawba error on the play, giving the ‘Dogs a four-run lead.
 
Furr got Catawba’s rally started by leading off the seventh with a homer. An RBI double from sophomore outfielder Ethan Satterfield (Madison, N.C.), followed by an RBI single from freshman infielder Craig Brooks (Monroe, N.C.) made it 9-8. The Indians tied it at nine in the eighth. Underwood led off the frame with a single, went to second on Bostian’s single, then moved to third on a sacrifice. He scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
 
Wingate had the answer in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead. Spitz singled to start the inning, then stole second. He moved to third on a Catawba error, then scored on Yeung’s bunt single, giving the Bulldogs a 10-9 lead.
 
The Indians responded in the top of the ninth with three runs. The first two batters of the inning reached via Wingate errors. Brooks tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Underwood ripped an RBI double down the left field line to give Catawba the lead. Sophomore infielder Cameron Beard (Conover, N.C.) added some insurance by drawing a bases-loaded walk, making it 13-11 heading to the bottom of the ninth.
 
The Bulldogs would not go quietly in the final frame. Junior designated hitter James Tedder (Clemmons, N.C.) drew a leadoff walk. Allison followed two batters later with an RBI double to left to get Wingate to within a run. He went to third on a passed ball. Spitz lifted a fly ball to right center, which was caught by Bostian. His throw was right on target, throwing out Allison at the plate to end the game.
 
Brooks got the win in relief, improving to 1-0. He allowed one run on two this in 1 2/3 innings, striking out two. Freshman right-hander Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits in two innings of work, striking out three.
 
Game Two: Catawba 5, Wingate 2
 
Underwood went three-for-three with two RBI in the nightcap to lead Catawba’s attack. Hawks was one-for-four with an RBI, while Brooks went two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored.
 
Catawba did most of its damage in the fourth, scoring four runs. The Indians loaded the bases with three consecutive singles to start the frame. Hawks followed with a two-run single to make it 2-0. Brooks ripped a double to left center to push the lead to three, while an RBI single from Underwood capped the scoring in the inning.
 
Underwood added another RBI single in the sixth to make it 5-0.
 
Wingate got on the board in the sixth. Spitz lined a triple to left center, then scored on a wild pitch. Yeung drove home McPherson with an RBI single to make the final margin 5-2.
 
Junior left-hander Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, N.C.) went the distance to pick up the win, improving to 2-2 on the year. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out 10 while walking two. Sophomore right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-2. He allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings, striking out three.  
 
The two teams are back in action Sunday, finishing the three-game series at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field.
