Wingate, N.C.----Catawba College sophomore first baseman
Chris Dula (Troutman, N.C.) drove in six runs as the Indians scored 12 times in the first three innings en route to a 13-5 victory over the host Bulldogs of Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Indians complete the weekend sweep, improving to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 8-9 on the season and 0-6 in the conference.
Dula had a triple and a homer on the day, while also scoring a pair of runs. Junior designated hitter
Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, N.C.) was three-for-four with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore outfielder
Keaton Hawks (Lexington, N.C.) was four-for-five with an RBI and two runs scored for the Indians.
Redshirt junior first baseman
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) was two-for-five with a double and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder
Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) had a double and scored four of Wingate’s five runs on the day. Freshman catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) added a two-for-four day, driving in a run.
The Indians jumped out to a quick lead, scoring four runs in the first. Dula got the scoring started with a two-run triple to center. Hawks followed with an RBI triple, while the fourth run of the inning scored on a Wingate error.
The ‘Dogs answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Freshman outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) singled, stole second, then scored on an RBI single from senior infielder
Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.). Yeung followed with an RBI single to plate McPherson, making it 4-2.
Catawba had the answer in the second, with Dula lining a grand slam over the fence in right to give the Indians a six-run lead. An RBI single from senior catcher
Greg Lawson (Charlotte, N.C.) in the third made it 9-2. Sophomore infielder
Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, N.C.) drove him in with an RBI single, while a two-run homer from Furr made it 12-2.
The Bulldogs got one run back in the third when McPherson scored on Yeung’s RBI double. Catawba scored in the fifth on an RBI single from Hawks.
McPherson drew another walk in the seventh, then scored on Clark’s RBI single to make it 13-4. McPherson led off the ninth with a double. He scored on a double play, making the final margin 13-5.
Junior right-hander
Ross Whitley (Mooresville, N.C.) got the win, improving to 3-1 on the year. He allowed four runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of work, striking out five and walking four. Sophomore right-hander
Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 2-1. He allowed seven earned runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings, striking out two.
Wingate returns to action Wednesday, traveling to Erskine for a 2:30 p.m. start. The Bulldogs return to conference play Friday night, playing at Lenoir-Rhyne at 6 p.m. Catawba travels to Belmont Abbey Wednesday for a 2 p.m. start.
