Flying Fleet down Bulldogs 9-2 Wednesday

Due West, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs took an early 2-0 lead, but the Flying Fleet of Erskine College answered with the final nine runs of the game, defeating the visiting Bulldogs 9-2 in NCAA Division II baseball action Wednesday afternoon. Erskine improves to 7-6 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-10 on the year.
 
Will Huff (Sugar Hill, Ga.) led the Erskine attack, going three-for-four with a homer, four RBI and two runs scored. Josh Purvis (Valdosta, Ga.) added an RBI and a run scored, while Drew Willingham (Greenwood, S.C.) scored a pair of runs for the Flying Fleet.
 
Redshirt junior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) had a double and a run scored for the Bulldogs. Senior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) was one-for-four with a run scored, while freshman outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was one-for-two with an RBI.
 
The Bulldogs got on the board first in the second. Allison led off the inning with a single, then went to third on an error. He scored on an RBI groundout from freshman catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) to make it 1-0.
 
Wingate took a two-run lead in the fourth. Yeung led the inning off with a double, then went to third on an error. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Spitz to make it 2-0.
 
The Flying Fleet cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame. Huff started the inning with a double, then scored on a Wingate error. An RBI single from Purvis in the fifth tied the game at two. Huff followed with a sacrifice fly to put Erskine on top 3-2.
 
The Flying Fleet added four more runs in the seventh to push the lead to five. Huff delivered the big blow, blasting a three-run homer to give Erskine a 7-2 advantage. The Flying Fleet added two more runs in the eighth, via a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly, making the final margin 9-2.
 
Left-hander John Sever (Travelers Rest, S.C.) got the win for Erskine, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings, striking out seven to improve to 4-1 on the season. Senior right-hander Justin Nygard (Wilson, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year. He allowed three runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking four.
 
The Bulldogs are back in action this weekend, returning to SAC play for a three-game series at Lenoir-Rhyne. Game one is Friday night at 6 p.m. Wingate and LRU meet for a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
