Bulldogs move to 4-0 with 9-6 win over Knights

Laurinburg, N.C.----Wingate University senior right-hander Justin Nygard (Wilson, N.C.) threw five scoreless innings, as the Wingate University Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-0 lead en route to a 9-6 victory at St. Andrews University in NCAA Division II baseball action Tuesday afternoon. Wingate improves to 4-0 overall, while the Knights fall to 2-4 on the season.
 
Senior infielder Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) was four-for-five with three RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Freshman outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-four with a double and three runs scored. Redshirt junior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) had double and an RBI, while senior outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) went three-for-five for the Bulldogs.
 
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Spitz started the game with a double, then scored on an RBI single from Vazquez.
 
Wingate added to its lead in the second inning. Vazquez got it started with an RBI single, while Spitz would come around to score on a St. Andrews error to make it 3-0.
 
The Bulldogs plated six runs in the sixth to push the lead to nine. The first three batters of the inning were hit by a pitch, while an RBI single from junior catcher Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) started the scoring. An RBI groundout from freshman infielder Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) made it 5-0. After a balk plated the sixth run of the game, Vazquez added another RBI single. Yeung added an RBI single, while senior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) capped the scoring with an RBI double to left, making it 9-0.
 
The Knights scored three runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to cut it to a three-run deficit. Redshirt junior right-hander Josh Karr (Richmond, Va.) entered the game in the ninth, retiring all three batters he faced to notch his first save of the year.
 
Nygard allowed only two hits in his five innings of work, striking out seven and walking two to improve to 1-0 on the year. Junior left-hander Travis Holland took the loss for the Knights. He allowed three runs on seven hits in two innings of work, striking out three.
 
Wingate returns to action this weekend, hosting number one Mount Olive in a three-game series at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. They will meet for a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
