Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s tennis team won two of three doubles matches and five of six singles matches to notch a 7-2 victory over the visiting Jaguars of Augusta State University in NCAA Division II women’s tennis action Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 3-0 overall, while Augusta State falls to 1-1 on the season.
 
The Jaguars got on the board first, winning 8-2 in number three doubles action. Sophomore Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) and freshman Becca Thompson (Alpharetta, Ga.) notched an 8-4 victory in number one doubles to tie the match at one. Sophomore Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) rallied for a 9-7 victory in number three doubles to give Wingate a 2-1 lead heading to singles.
 
Sophomore Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) registered a 6-3, 6-3 win in number four singles action to make it 3-1. Evers notched a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win in number one singles to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 advantage. Julie Fontaine of Augusta State won 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in number six singles action to make it 4-2.
 
Thomas clinched the match for the Bulldogs, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to make it 5-2. Poole rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win in number three singles, while junior Kelli Ferguson’s (Concord, N.C.) 7-5, 5-6, 7-6 win in number five singles made the final margin 7-2.
 
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, hosting Limestone at 11 a.m.
