‘Dogs split doubleheader at Newberry to take weekend series

The Wingate University Bulldogs notched a 4-2 victory over Newberry College in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader to take two out of three in the weekend series. The Wolves built a 10-3 lead in game one, then withstood Wingate’s rally, hanging on for a 10-9 win to salvage one game in the weekend series. The Bulldogs are 14-12 overall and 4-8 in the SAC, while the Wolves move to 9-14 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
 
Game One: Newberry 10, Wingate 9
 
Andy Vogel went two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Newberry attack. Kevin Rufus drove in two runs, while Josh McElwee had an RBI and two runs scored for the Wolves.
 
Redshirt junior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior infielders Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) and Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) each went two-for-five with two RBI for the Bulldogs.
 
Wingate jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Yeung connected on his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to left.
 
Newberry took the lead, plating four runs in the third. McElwee and Vogel started the rally with RBI singles, while the last two runs of the frame scored via Wingate errors.
 
An RBI single from freshman infielder Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) cut the lead to one in the fourth. The Wolves answered with four more runs in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on errors, while also getting an RBI single from Albert Baur and a sacrifice fly from Rufus to take an 8-3 lead.
 
Rufus drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth, while another Wingate error allowed Newberry’s 10th run of the day to score, pushing the lead to seven.
 
The Bulldogs cut the lead to five in the sixth on Vazquez’s two-run single. Wingate added four more runs in the eighth to make it a one-run game. The first run scored on a wild pitch, while Karr ripped a two-run double to left center to make it 10-8. He would score on a sacrifice fly from senior outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.), making it 10-9.
 
Matt Chapman retired the final five hitters of the game to preserve the win for the Wolves, notching his first save of the year. Mario Rojas got the win, allowing five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out four to improve to 3-1. Senior right-hander Justin Nygard (Wilson, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-3. He allowed eight runs (five earned) on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings, striking out one while walking six.
 
Game Two: Wingate 4, Newberry 2
 
Junior infielder James Tedder (Clemmons, N.C.) was two-for three with a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Karr was two-for-four with a double and an RBI, while Vazquez went one-for-three with an RBI.
 
The Bulldogs got on the board in the second. Senior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) reached on a one-out single, went to second on a single from junior catcher Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.), then scored on Tedder’s RBI single.
 
Tedder led off the fifth with his first homer of the year to put the ‘Dogs on top 2-0. Newberry answered with two runs in the sixth to tie the game. The first run scored on McElwee’s RBI groundout, while Baur’s RBI single tied the game.
 
Wingate had the answer in the seventh, scoring twice to regain the lead. Freshman catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) started the frame with a single, then went to second on Tedder’s sacrifice. Clark moved to third on an error, then scored the go-ahead run on a squeeze bunt from Vazquez. Karr followed with an RBI double to push the lead to two.
 
Redshirt junior right-hander Josh Karr (Richmond, Va.) shut down the Wolves in the seventh to nail down his sixth save of the season. Sophomore right-hander Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) got the win, improving to 3-1 on the season. Sophomore right-hander Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.) had his second solid start of the week, shutting the Wolves out in 4 2/3 innings of work, striking out four while allowing just three hits. Alex Roberts took the loss, falling to 2-2. He allowed four runs on nine hits in seven innings, striking out two.
 
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, hosting St. Andrews at 6 p.m.
