Bulldogs take two from LMU to complete weekend sweep

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs got a pair of homers from senior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) in game one, while getting a dominant pitching performance from senior right-hander Justin Nygard (Wilson, N.C.) in game two, sweeping the visiting Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon. Wingate won the first game 8-4, while taking game two 6-1 to complete the weekend sweep over LMU. The ‘Dogs improve to 17-14 overall and 7-8 in the SAC, while LMU falls to 13-18 overall and 7-8 in the conference.
 
Game One: Wingate 8, LMU 4
 
Allison had two homers and four RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) added a homer and three RBI, while freshman outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) had a homer for the Bulldogs.
 
Senior infielder Gelson Perez (Gurabo, P.R.) had a pair of RBI for the Railsplitters, while junior infielder Curt Fuqua (Jackson, Tenn.) had a double and two runs scored.
 
LMU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Railsplitters loaded the bases with no outs, scoring the first run on a passed ball. Perez followed with an RBI groundout, while a sacrifice fly from junior catcher Nick Pressley (Knoxville, Tenn.) put Lincoln Memorial on top by three.
 
Wingate had the answer in the bottom of the inning, getting two on in front of Allison, who hit a towering blast to left to tie the game at three.
 
LMU regained the lead in the third on an RBI double from Perez, taking a 4-3 advantage. Allison again had the answer, connecting on his second homer of the day and sixth of the year in the fourth, a solo shot to tie it at four.
 
The Bulldogs took the lead in the fifth when Spitz belted his second homer of the year, a solo shot to right to make it 5-4. McPherson added some insurance in the seventh, connecting on his team-best ninth homer of the season, a three-run shot to right to make it 8-4.
 
Senior right-hander Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jacksonville, Fla.) got the win in relief. He allowed one earned run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out three to improve to 1-1 on the year. Freshman right-hander Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings to notch his first save of the year. Senior right-hander Brad Pressley (Knoxville, Tenn.) took the loss, falling to 3-2. He allowed five runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out one.
 
Game Two: Wingate 6, LMU 1
 
Redshirt junior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) was three-for-three with two double and four RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two. McPherson was two-for-three with a double, RBI and two runs scored, while Karr went two-for-three with two runs scored.
 
Senior infielder Joseph Horsley (Corryton, Tenn.) was two-for-three with a double and a run scored to lead the LMU attack.
 
Wingate got off to a quick start, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. McPherson followed a Karr single with a double to right, while Yeung plated both of them with a two-run single. Allison lined a double to left to drive home Yeung, giving the ‘Dogs a three-run advantage.
 
LMU got on the board in the third, when Horsley singled, stole second, then scored on a Wingate error, making it 3-1.
 
Wingate scored three more runs in the fifth to push the lead to five. McPherson started the scoring with an RBI double to right. Yeung followed with a two-run double to left center to make it a five-run game.

That would be plenty for Nygard who notched Wingate’s first complete game of the year. He struck out 10 on the afternoon, allowing an unearned run on five hits to improve to 2-3 on the year. Junior left-hander Brandon Cowan (Tequesta, Fla.) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in four innings of work, falling to 1-2.
 
Wingate returns to action Tuesday, hosting Winston-Salem State at 6 p.m. Lincoln Memorial also returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Alabama-Huntsville.
