“It is good to get back on track (tonight),” Wingate head coach
Jeff Gregory says. “We played a clean game…we swung the bats well…we were solid all the way around. Casey Allison was the catalyst…everyone fed off his energy. Ben Currie pitched a tremendous game tonight.”
In the first inning, Allison hit a two-out, three-run home run to left field. Allison’s dinger scored infielders
Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) and
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.), who had both walked. Allison’s fourth homer of the season gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish. Allison struck again in Wingate’s five-run second inning. He smashed a three-RBI double down the left-field line to give the visitors an 8-0 advantage.
Currie didn’t need the eight-run cushion, but he flourished with the extra support. In seven innings, the right-hander allowed one earned run on three hits (three singles). Currie struck out three and walked four. Freshmen hurlers
Byron Sherrill (Maiden, N.C.) and
Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) pitched one inning each of no-hit ball to seal the deal.
Karr hit a solo home run (his fifth this year) with one out in the fourth inning to give the Bulldogs a 9-0 lead. Karr was one-for-two with one RBI, two walks and three runs scored. Yeung also recorded two walks and three runs scored. Wingate freshman shortstop
