Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored in each of the first four innings, taking a 9-4 lead en route to a 12-6 victory over the visiting Rams of Winston-Salem State University in NCAA Division II baseball action Tuesday night at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Bulldogs win their fourth straight, improving to 18-14 overall. Winston-Salem State falls to 20-15 on the year.
Redshirt junior first baseman
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) was three-for-four with a double, homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Senior infielder
Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) was also three-for-four with a double, homer, two RBI and three runs scored. Senior outfielder
Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) had three RBI on the night, while freshman outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) scored three runs. Senior infielder
Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) had a double, homer and two RBI.
Freshman infielder
Devin McLemore (High Point, N.C.) was three-for-four with a double, homer, three RBI and a run scored to lead the WSSU attack. Junior outfielder
German Reyes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) had two RBI and a run scored for the Rams, while senior catcher
Michael Robbins (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had two doubles and two runs scored.
The Rams took the lead in the top of the first when Robbins lined a double to deep center, then scored on an RBI single from Reyes.
Wingate had the answer in the bottom of the first, taking a 2-1 lead on a two-out, two-run single from Allison. A solo homer from Vazquez in the second, his fifth of the year, pushed the lead to two.
The Bulldogs added four runs in the third to take a six-run lead. Karr doubled to start the inning, then scored on an RBI single from senior outfielder
Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.). Yeung followed with an RBI double, while an RBI single from junior infielder
James Tedder (Clemmons, N.C.) made it 6-1. He would score on an RBI double from Vazquez to make it a six-run game.
The Rams answered with three runs in the fourth. McLemore got it started with a two-run single, while the third run of the frame scored on a wild pitch, making it 7-4.
The ‘Dogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to push the lead back to five. Yeung provided the offense in the frame, lining a two-run shot to right, his fourth of the year, to make it 9-4.
Karr blasted his sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left center in the sixth to give the ‘Dogs an 11-4 advantage.
An RBI groundout from Reyes in the seventh made it 11-5. McLemore’s solo homer in the eighth made it a five-run game. The Bulldogs capped the scoring on the night in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from Allison, making the final margin 12-6.
Sophomore right-hander
Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) got the win, improving to 4-1 on the year. He allowed one run on three hits in three innings of work, striking out four. Senior right-hander
Kyle Brady (Cincinnati, Ohio) struck out eight batters in his three innings of work. Junior right-hander
Matt High (Peachland, N.C.) racked up four strikeouts in his one inning of work. Senior right-hander
Sheldon Johnson (Northwoodbury, N.J.) took the loss, falling to 2-4. He allowed seven runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings, striking out four.
Wingate returns to action Wednesday, hosting Limestone at 6 p.m. The Rams are back in action next Tuesday, traveling to UNC Pembroke for a 6 p.m. start.
