Jefferson City, Tenn.----The Wingate University Bulldogs got homers from six different players on Saturday afternoon, with four different Bulldogs hitting two homers as Wingate swept a doubleheader at Carson-Newman College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. Wingate won the first game 12-4, while taking game two 8-4, pushing its winning streak to seven games. The Bulldogs improve to 21-14 overall and 9-8 in the SAC. The Eagles fall to 17-17 overall and 9-8 in the conference.
Game One: Wingate 12, Carson-Newman 4
The Bulldogs belted six homers en route to the game one victory. Senior outfielder
Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) had two homers and a double, driving in three while also scoring three times. Senior outfielder
Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) had a homer, two RBI and two runs scored, while senior infielder
Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) had a homer and two runs scored. Junior catcher
Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) had a homer and two RBI, while freshman outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) added a homer.
Freshman shortstop
Bo Ausmus (Jefferson City, Tenn.) drove in two runs to lead the Carson-Newman offense. Junior catcher
Lance Reed (Elizabethton, Tenn.) had a double and a run scored for the Eagles, while freshman outfielder
Cody Fox (Seymour, Tenn.) had an RBI and a run scored.
Wingate got on the board in the second, when Allison connected on his eighth homer of the year, a solo shot to center. Junior infielder
James Tedder (Clemmons, N.C.) added an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Spitz and Karr started the third with back-to-back homers to put the ‘Dogs on top by four. Wingate took a 5-0 lead on an RBI groundout from senior infielder
Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) in the fourth.
The Eagles did all of their damage in the fifth, plating four runs to make it a one-run game. Fox got it started with an RBI single, while an RBI double from junior outfielder
Lucas Mohon (Glasgow, Ky.) made it 5-2. A two-run single from Ausmus made it 5-4. Carson-Newman tried to tie it on the next play when
Zach Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) doubled to left, but Ausmus was thrown out at home by Spitz, notching his fifth outfield assist of the year to keep Wingate on top.
The Bulldogs pushed the lead to three in the sixth when Hunter belted his fifth homer of the season. McPherson connected on his team-best 10th homer of the year in the seventh, a two-run shot to make it 9-4.
Redshirt junior first baseman
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) pushed the lead to six with an RBI double in the ninth. Allison followed by blasting his second homer of the day, a two-run shot to left center, making the final margin 12-4.
Sophomore right-hander
Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) got the win, improving to 4-2 on the year. He allowed four runs on eight hits in eight innings of work, striking out seven while walking just one. Senior right-hander
Robby Thigpen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) took the loss, falling to 5-2 on the year. He allowed seven runs on eight hits in six innings of work, striking out nine.
Game Two: Wingate 8, Carson-Newman 4
The Bulldogs belted four more homers in game two, jumping out to an 8-1 lead en route to the four-run victory. Hunter was two-for-three with a double, homer and three RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Yeung was two-for-four with a homer and two RBI, while Karr went two-for-three with a homer and two runs scored.
Senior first baseman
Kyle Koeneman (Seymour, Tenn.) was one-for-three with a homer to lead the Carson-Newman attack. Senior infielder
Lance Rorex (Chattanooga, Tenn.) went one-for-two with an RBI for the Eagles.
After two scoreless innings, the Bulldogs plated five runs in the third to take the lead. McPherson’s sacrifice fly got it started, while Yeung followed two batters later with a two-run homer to left to make it 3-0. After two more singles, Hunter lined an RBI double to right center to push the lead to five.
The combo of Spitz and Karr went back-to-back for the second time Saturday in the fourth inning, giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. Karr is third on the team with eight homers this year, while Spitz has four homers in his freshman campaign.
Keoeneman registered the first hit of game two for the Eagles with two outs in the fourth, belting a solo shot to left center to make it 7-1. The Bulldogs capped their scoring on the day in the fifth, when Hunter hit his second homer of the day and sixth of the year to push the lead to seven.
After a long rain delay, the Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth. A pair of bases-loaded walks made it 8-3, while a sacrifice fly from Rorex cut the Wingate deficit to four.
Sophomore right-hander
Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) struck out the final batter of the sixth to get out of the inning. He would retire the Eagles in order in the seventh, notching two more strikeouts to collect his first save of the year. Senior right-hander
Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jacksonville, Fla.) got the win, improving to 2-1. He allowed two earned runs on just two hits in five innings of work. Keoeneman took the loss, falling to 2-1. He allowed three runs on three hits in three innings of work.
The Bulldogs and Eagles finish the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
