Jefferson City, Tenn.----The Wingate University men’s and women’s tennis teams both notched 9-0 victories over the Eagles of Carson-Newman College in South Atlantic Conference tennis action Sunday afternoon. The Wingate women improve to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The Bulldog men improve to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the conference. Carson-Newman’s women fall to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the SAC, while the men fall to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
The women swept through doubles play, getting an 8-5 win in number one doubles from sophomore
Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) and freshman
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.). Sophomore
Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman
Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) followed with an 8-1 win in number two doubles action, while an 8-4 win from sophomore
Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and junior
Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) in number three doubles made it 3-0 heading to singles play.
Wingate was even more dominant in singles action, dropping just 10 games in the 12 sets. Evers won 6-0, 6-1 in number one singles, while Thomas won 6-0, 6-0 at number two singles. Poole won 6-3, 6-1 at number three, while Winston added a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the number four position. Ferguson won 6-0, 6-1 at number five singles, while Williams finished off the unblemished slate with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
The Wingate men got things started with an 8-2 win from senior
Flavio Rathsam (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman
Neal Towlson (Warwick, Bermuda) in number one doubles action. Seniors
Drew Owen (Kitchener, Ontario) and
Matt Lichtenstein (Darnestown, Md.) notched a 9-7 win in number two doubles, while an 8-6 win from freshman
Diego Martinez (Queretaro, Mexico) and sophomore
Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) put Wingate on top 3-0 heading to singles action.
Rathsam notched a 6-0, 6-1 win in number one singles action, while a 6-0, 6-1 win from Owen in number two singles clinched the victory. Lichtenstein notched a 6-4, 6-1 win in number three singles play, while Martinez won 6-3, 6-1 in number four singles action. Towlson won 7-5, 6-0 in number five singles, while Forbes finished off the perfect day for the Bulldogs with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Wingate returns to action Monday, traveling to Tusculum for an 11:30 a.m. start.
