Currie and Allison lead Bulldogs to eighth straight SAC win

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) tossed a complete game four-hitter Friday night, leading the Bulldogs past Anderson (S.C.) University 8-1 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Bulldogs win their eighth straight SAC game, improving to 23-15 overall and 11-8 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 10-28 overall and 4-15 in the SAC.
 
Senior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) was two-for-four with a homer and three RBI to lead the offense. Freshman outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was three-for-five with a triple, homer and three runs scored. Senior outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) added three hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs.
 
Sophomore outfielder Zach Reeves (Greenville, S.C.) was two-for-three with an RBI to lead the Anderson attack. Senior infielder Blake May (Largo, Fla.) added a double for the Trojans.
 
Wingate jumped out to a quick lead in the first, getting a leadoff triple from Spitz in the right center field gap. McPherson plated him with an RBI groundout to make it 1-0. Spitz made it 2-0 in the third when he connected on his sixth homer of the year, a solo shot down the left field line.
 
Junior catcher Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) ripped one-out double to right center in the fifth, then scored on an RBI single from senior infielder Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) to make it 3-0.
 
Anderson got on the board in the sixth, when senior outfielder Ryan Kirkland (Loganville, Ga.) reached on a leadoff walk. He went to second on a groundout, then scored on an RBI single from Reeves to cut the Wingate lead to two.
 
The Bulldogs had the emphatic answer in the seventh, scoring five runs to blow the game open. Senior infielder Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) plated the first run with an RBI fielder’s choice, while McPherson followed with an RBI single to make it 5-1. Allison would follow with the big blow of the game, a three-run shot to left center to make it 8-1. The reigning SAC Player of the Week, Allison hit his fourth homer in two games this week, and leads the team with 13 on the year. His homer was the 60th this season for Wingate, who leads the nation in homers in 2012.
 
Currie needed only 92 pitches for his complete game. He allowed one run on just four hits, striking out two and walking one to improve to 5-2 on the year. Freshman right-hander JT Trujillo (Jupiter, Fla.) took the loss, falling to 2-4. He allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work, striking out five and walking four.
 
The two teams meet for a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will celebrate Senior Day, honoring seven seniors playing in their final home game at Wingate. The ceremony will take place at 12:40 p.m.
