Sixth-ranked Pirates take two from Bulldogs Tuesday

Savannah, Ga.----The sixth-ranked Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State swept a doubleheader against the visiting Wingate University Bulldogs in NCAA Division II softball action Tuesday afternoon. Armstrong Atlantic won by scores of 3-1 and 9-0 to improve to 21-4 overall. The Bulldogs fall to 14-8 on the year.
 
Game One: Armstrong Atlantic 3, Wingate 1
 
The Pirates scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth rally for a game one victory. Senior infielder Baillie Temples (Midland, Ga.) had an RBI and a run scored to lead the Armstrong Atlantic attack. Senior first baseman Whitney Galloway (Rossville, Ga.) and freshman catcher Bridget Devlin (Brooklet, Ga.) also drove in runs for the Pirates.
 
Sophomore outfielder Jordyn Setzer (Taylorsville, N.C.) drove in Wingate’s run in game one. Freshman designated player Betsy Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) had a hit and a run scored, while junior first baseman Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) had a double for the Bulldogs.
 
The Bulldogs got on the board in the fourth, with Braswell starting the two-out rally with a single. Loudermilt followed with a double, sending Braswell to third. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Setzer lined an RBI single to center to give Wingate a 1-0 lead.
 
After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth, Temples tied the game with an RBI triple. She scored the go-ahead run on Galloway’s RBI single. Another RBI single off the bat of Devlin gave the Pirates a 3-1 lead.
 
Freshman left-hander Caitlin Campbell (Huntersville, N.C.) got the win for the Pirates, improving to 10-2 on the year. She allowed a run on six hits in seven innings of work, striking out two. Freshman right-hander Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings, striking out two to fall to 12-6 overall.
 
Game Two: Armstrong Atlantic 9, Wingate 0 (Five innings)
 
Junior infielder Brittany Cooley (Graysville, Tenn.) was two-for-three with two homers and five RBI to lead the Armstrong attack in game two. Senior infielder Heather Walker (Peachtree City, Ga.) was one-for-three with two RBI and a run scored, while freshman infielder Alexis Mercer (Rincon, Ga.) added a homer and two runs scored for the Pirates.
 
Four different Bulldogs had hits in game two. The hits came from Braswell, Loudermilt, freshman infielder Brittany Owens (Greenville, N.C.) and junior outfielder Kasey Pendley (Marion, N.C.)
 
Mercer got the Pirates on the board in the second with a leadoff homer, giving Armstrong Atlantic a 1-0 lead.
 
The Pirates added five runs to their lead in the fourth. Walker’s two-run single got the scoring started. Another run scored for Armstrong on the play, making it 5-0. Cooley followed with a two-run homer to give the Pirates a six-run lead.
 
Cooley blasted a three-run shot in the fifth inning, making the final score 9-0.
 
Junior right-hander Celia Blome (Adairsville, Ga.) got the win, improving to 1-0 on the year. She allowed four hits in five innings of work, striking out two. Paul took the loss, falling to 12-7. She allowed six runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings.
 
Wingate returns to action Wednesday, hosting Limestone College at 1:30 p.m.
