Bulldogs rally for thrilling 8-4 win in 14 innings at Newberry

The Wingate University Bulldogs scored a run with two outs in the top of the ninth to send the game to extra innings, then scored four runs in the top of the 14th to claim a dramatic 8-4 victory over Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday night. The Bulldogs win their fourth straight, improving to 13-11 overall and 3-7 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 8-13 overall and 4-6 in the SAC.
 
Senior outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) was two-for-five with a homer and three RBI, including the go-ahead RBI single in the 14th. Freshman outfielder Blake Throneburg (Graham, N.C.) came off the bench to go two-for-three with a double, three RBI and a run scored. Senior infielder Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) went two-for-five with an RBI and two runs scored.
 
Kevin Rufus was two-for-four with a double and two RBI to lead the Newberry attack. Wesley Camp went three-for-six with an RBI and a run scored, while Robby Scaggs had a double, RBI and a run scored for the Wolves.
 
The Wolves got on the board in the first, getting a leadoff single from Camp, who then stole second and scored on an RBI double from Scaggs. An RBI single from Rufus plated Scaggs to make it 2-0.
 
Wingate tied the game in the fourth. Vazquez led off the frame with a single, which was the first hit of the night for the Bulldogs. McPherson then blasted his seventh homer of the year, a two-run shot to right center to tie it at two.
 
That would be all of the scoring until the bottom of the seventh. John Fogarile led off the inning with a single, then went to second on a sacrifice. After a flyout, Rufus delivered a two-out RBI double to put the Wolves on top 3-2.
 
Junior catcher Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) drew a walk to start the ninth. Throneburg moved him to second with a sacrifice. Freshman infielder Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) reached first on a wild pitch after striking out, while junior pinch-hitter James Tedder (Clemmons, N.C.) walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, senior infielder Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) coaxed a walk to bring home the tying run, sending the game to extras.
 
Both teams were held scoreless in the 10th, with Wingate junior right-hander Josh Karr (Richmond, Va.) ending the bottom of the frame with a strikeout, leaving the potential winning run at third. Throneburg singled to start the 11th, then went to third on Tedder’s single. A sacrifice fly from Vazquez plated Throneburg to make it 4-3.
 
Newberry had the answer in the bottom of the inning. Alex Kirby drew a leadoff walk, stole second, then went to third on a groundout. He scored on Camp’s RBI single to tie the game at four, sending it to the 12th inning.
 
Newberry had a chance to end it in the 12th, getting runners on second and third with one out. Redshirt junior right-hander Blake Parsley (Charlotte, N.C.) got a strikeout, then induced an inning-ending groundout to keep the Wolves off the board. Newberry stranded two more runners in the 13th, with Parsley again getting out of trouble.
 
Vazquez was hit by a pitch to start the 14th, while Karr followed with a bunt single. McPherson delivered an RBI single to put the Bulldogs on top 5-4. A walk would then load the bases with no outs. The first two hitters were retired without a run scoring, bringing Throneburg to the plate with two outs and the bases still loaded. He would deliver the big blow, a bases-clearing three-run double to right center to make it 8-4.
 
Parsley shut down the Wolves in the bottom of the 14th, striking out two of the four batters he faced to notch the win, improving to 1-0 on the year. Sophomore right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) had a solid start for the Bulldogs, allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings, striking out five. DJ Hearsey took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings, striking out three to fall to 0-1. Josh McElwee had a great start for the Wolves, striking out 15 in his eight innings of work, allowing three runs on eight hits.
 
The two teams meet for a doubleheader Saturday, with game one starting at 1 p.m.
