#16 Indians notch 5-4 win over Wingate in 10 innings

Salisbury, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs overcame a 3-0 deficit, tying the game at four to send it to extras, but 16th-ranked Catawba College prevailed in 10 innings to notch a 5-4 victory over Wingate in NCAA Division II baseball action Tuesday night. Catawba improves to 32-10 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 26-20 on the year.
 
Cameron Beard was two-for-five with a double and an RBI to lead the Catawba attack. Chris Dula went two-for-four with a double and two runs scored, while Ryan Bostian had a double and an RBI for the Indians.
 
Junior designated hitter Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) was three-for-four with a double and a run scored to lead Wingate’s attack. Freshman infielder Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) went three-for-five with a double, RBI and two runs scored, while senior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) added a pair of hits, including a homer for the Bulldogs.
 
Catawba wasted little time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Ethan Satterfield’s RBI single. A wild pitch, followed by an RBI double from Bostian gave the Indians a 3-0 lead in the fourth.
 
Wingate got on the board in the fifth, plating two runs. Hunter led off the frame with a single, then scored on an RBI double from Godinez. An RBI single from senior infielder Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) made it 3-2.
 
Beard answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame, pushing the lead back to two.
 
The Bulldogs had the answer, cutting the lead to one in the seventh. Godinez singled to start the frame with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice. He scored on an RBI single from senior outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.), making it 4-3.
 
Wingate tied it in the eighth, when Allison connected on his 16th homer of the year, a solo shot to make it 4-4.
 
The game would then go to extras. Wingate was unable to score in the top of the 10th. The Indians loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame with one out. Keaton Hawks drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing home the game-winning run.
 
Clay Watson got the win for Catawba, improving to 2-0. He tossed a scoreless inning, striking out one. Junior right-hander Justin Somers (Wilmington, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed one run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of work, striking out four while walking two.
 
The Bulldogs return to action Friday, traveling to Mars Hill for a 2 p.m. start.
