‘Dogs blast eight homers in 20-4 win at Mars Hill

Mars Hill, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs showed why they lead the nation in homers Friday afternoon, belting eight long balls in a 20-4 victory at Mars Hill College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The ‘Dogs went back-to-back three different times, and got two homers each from senior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) and redshirt junior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.). Wingate improves to 27-20 overall and 13-12 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to on the year.

Wingate pounded out 24 hits on the day, while the eight homers give the Bulldogs 80 for the year, which ranks sixth on the league’s all-time single-season charts. The eight homers were just one shy of the SAC single-game record. Yeung went four-for-five on the day, driving in seven runs. Allison drove in four runs, while senior infielder Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) drove in three runs. Freshman outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was five-for-seven with four runs scored. Senior outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) and senior infielder Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) along with freshmen catchers Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) and Nick McGee (Goldsboro, N.C.) added homers for Wingate.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the first, when McPherson connected on his 12th homer of the year to make it 1-0. Yeung followed with his 11th blast of the year to push the lead to two.

Wingate blew the game open in the second, scoring eight times to take a 10-run advantage. An RBI single from freshman shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.), followed by Karr’s two-run single made it 5-0. Yeung would then come up with the bases loaded and connect on his second homer of the day, a grand slam to center to make it 9-0. Allison followed with a solo shot to make it 10-0 after two.

Vazquez ripped his seventh homer of the year in the fifth to push the lead to 11. Mars Hill got on the board in the fifth, scoring three times to cut the lead to eight. Jacob Rand started it with a bases-loaded walk, while an RBI single from Joey Belviso and an RBI groundout from Coty Pate made it 11-3.

Wingate had the answer in the sixth when Allison connected on his league-best 18th homer of the season, a three-run shot to left to push the advantage back to 11. Clark then connected on his first career homer to make it 15-3. Karr’s RBI single in the seventh gave the Bulldogs a 13-run lead.

McGee’s first career homer in the eighth made it 17-3. Spitz added an RBI single, while Yeung’s two-run double put the ‘Dogs on top 20-3.  Mars Hill took advantage of three Wingate errors to plate a run in the bottom of the ninth to make the final margin 20-4.

Sophomore right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) got the win, improving to 6-3 on the year. He allowed three runs on 10 hits in six innings of work, striking out five. Zach Davies took the loss, allowing 10 runs on nine hits in 1 1/3 innings of work, falling to 1-4 on the year.
