Seventh-seeded Bulldogs take on Catawba Thursday

Rock Hill, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs will be the seven seed in this week’s Food Lion SAC Softball Tournament, which begins Thursday at Tusculum College. Wingate finished the regular season 26-22 overall, going 8-10 in SAC play. The ‘Dogs take on Catawba Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
 
Junior first baseman Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) leads Wingate with a .348 batting average. She is second on the team with five homers, while leading the way with 10 doubles and 32 RBI. Freshman catcher Betsy Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) leads the way with eight homers and a .580 slugging percentage, while ranking second with nine doubles and 29 RBI.
 
Junior outfielder Kelsey Maffucci (Rockledge, Fla.) is second in the league with four triples, while hitting .308 with 12 RBI and 25 runs scored. Freshman shortstop Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) has nine doubles, five homers, three triples and 26 RBI, while leading the team with 31 runs scored.
 
Freshman right-hander Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) has tossed a 268 1/3 innings this season, ranking second in the league. She is 22-20 with a 2.53 ERA. Paul has 148 strikeouts and just 35 walks on the season. She has 30 complete games and seven shutouts, while also notching a save. Paul ranks second in the league in strikeouts, complete games and shutouts, while ranking fourth in wins.
 
Catawba swept the Bulldogs in the regular season meeting in Salisbury last week. The Indians won game one 1-0, while taking game two 8-1. The winner of the Wingate-Catawba game will take on the winner of the Anderson-Brevard game Friday at 10:30 a.m. The loser will take on the loser of the Anderson-Brevard game Friday at 10:30 a.m.
