Forest City, N.C.----The Wingate University blasted five homers Saturday night, scoring 13 runs in the final two innings en route to a 17-2 victory over the Eagles of Carson-Newman College on day three of the Food Lion SAC Tournament. The Bulldogs improve to 31-22 overall, advancing to championship Sunday against Tusculum College. The Eagles fall to 26-25 overall.
Freshman outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) had two homers and five RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior infielder
Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) had a homer and four RBI for the Bulldogs. Freshman catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was three-for-five with a double, RBI and two runs scored, while redshirt junior first baseman
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) had a homer and two RBI for the Bulldogs.
After the Eagles plated a run in the second, the Bulldogs answered with two in the third when Spitz connected on his seventh homer of the year, a two-run shot to left. Clark ripped a one-out double in the fourth, then scored on an RBI single from junior designated hitter
Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) to give Wingate a 3-1 lead.
Carson-Newman cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the fourth, but another RBI single from Clark put the Bulldogs on top 4-2.
Wingate added four runs in the eighth to push the lead to six. Karr had the big blow of the frame, blasting a grand slam to left to make it 8-2.
The Bulldogs added nine more runs in the ninth. RBI doubles from freshman shortstop

Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) gave Wingate a 10-2 lead. Spitz followed with his second homer of the night, a three-run shot to left center to push the lead to 11. Yeung added his third homer of the tournament and 16th of the year, a two-run shot to make it 15-2. Sophomore pinch-hitter
Will Davis (Farmville, N.C.) added his first career homer, a two-run shot to make the final margin 17-2.
Freshman right-hander
Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) got the win in relief, improving to 1-1 on the year. He tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five while allowing just one hit.
Ben McKinney took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings of work, falling to 1-1 on the year.
Wingate returns to action Sunday, taking on the top-seeded and fourth ranked Pioneers of Tusculum at 1 p.m. If the Bulldogs win that game, the two will play another game for the tournament title.
