#29 Bulldogs claim second straight SAC championship

The top-seeded and 29th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs defeated the second seeded Anderson University Trojans 5-1 to claim their second consecutive Food Lion SAC women’s tennis tournament title Saturday morning at the Rock Hill Tennis Center. The Bulldogs improve to 18-4 overall and receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Anderson falls to 12-9 overall.
 
Sophomore Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) got Wingate on the board with an 8-4 win in number two doubles. An 8-4 victory from sophomore Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and junior Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead heading to singles play.
 
Winston prevailed 6-2, 6-1 in number four singles action to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage. She was named the MVP of the tournament, going 2-0 in doubles play and 1-0 in singles action during the tournament. Freshman Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in number two singles to make it 4-1. Williams got the clinching win for the Bulldogs, winning 7-6, 6-3 in number six singles, giving Wingate the 5-1 victory.
 
The Bulldogs earn their second consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament. Wingate cruised through the SAC Tournament, winning 5-1 in semifinal action against Brevard on Friday. The Bulldogs won 2011 championship with a 5-0 victory over Mars Hill. Wingate will learn its postseason fate Tuesday, April 28 at 8:30 p.m.
