Wilson, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs piled up 18 hits, including four homers en route to a 16-6 victory at Barton College in NCAA Division II baseball action Tuesday afternoon. The visiting Bulldogs improve to 25-16 overall, while moving to 11-4 on the road this season. Barton falls to 12-22 on the year.
Redshirt junior first baseman
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) had two homers and four RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Senior infielder
Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) had a homer and three RBI for the Bulldogs, while senior outfielder
Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) was three-for-four with a homer and three runs scored. Senior infielder
Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) added a pair of doubles and three RBI.
Trailing 1-0 after two innings, Wingate exploded for seven runs in the third. The Bulldogs loaded the bases, with Karr plating the first two runs of the day via a two-run single. Senior outfielder
Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) followed with an RBI single. Yeung followed with a three-run shot to left to give the ‘Dogs a 6-1 lead. Allison would then connect on his team-best 14th homer of the year to push the lead to six.
Yeung scored on a sacrifice fly from junior designated hitter
Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) in the fifth to make it 8-1. Allison scored on Vazquez’s RBI double to make it an eight-run advantage. Barton answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, but Karr answered with his 11th homer of the year to make it 10-2.
Vazquez plated two more runs in the seventh with his second double of the day to put the visitors on top 12-2. Yeung connected on his second homer of the day and 10th of the year in the eighth to push the lead to 11. Wingate’s 14th run of the day scored on a wild pitch, while RBI singles from redshirt freshmen
Nick McGee (Goldsboro, N.C.) and
Blake Throneburg (Graham, N.C.) made it 16-2.
Barton scored four runs in the ninth, highlighted by a two-run single from
Phillip Williams to make the final margin 16-6.
Senior right-hander
Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jacksonville, Fla.) got the win, improving to 3-2. He allowed two runs on five hits in five innings of work, striking out three.
Brandon Warren took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in four innings of work to fall to 2-2 on the year.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Pfeiffer for a 3 p.m. start.
