Misenheimer, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs swept a doubleheader at Pfeiffer University in NCAA Division II softball action Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the first game 6-3, while rallying for a 4-3 victory in game two to improve to 23-19 overall. Pfeiffer falls to 15-28 on the season.
Game One: Wingate 6, Pfeiffer 3
Junior first baseman
Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) had a homer and three RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Freshman shortstop
Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) was two-for-three with a double, RBI and two runs scored, while freshman infielder
Brittany Owens (Greenville, N.C.) was three-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.
Wingate got on the board in the first, when Loudermilt connected on her fourth homer of the year, a three-run shot to left to give the ‘Dogs a 3-0 lead.
Burrell started the third with a single, then scored on an RBI double from freshman catcher
Betsy Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) to make it 4-0.
Owens led off the sixth with a single, then scored on Burrell’s RBI double to push the lead to five. Owens capped Wingate’s scoring in game one with an RBI single in the seventh to make it 6-0.
The Falcons avoided the shutout in the seventh, getting a three-run homer from senior first baseman
Kirsten Patterson (Anthem, Ariz.) to make the final margin 6-3.
Freshman right-hander
Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the win, improving to 18-17 overall. She allowed two earned runs on three hits in seven innings of work, striking out four without walking a batter. Freshman right-hander
Lindsey Russell (Huntersville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 3-8 on the year. She allowed four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings of work, striking out two while walking four.
Game Two: Wingate 4, Pfeiffer 3
Senior designated player
Joya Wortham (Creedmoor, N.C. ) was two-for-four with a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Sophomore infielder
Hayley Whitley (Monroe, N.C.) was one-for-three with an RBI and a run scored, while sophomore outfielder
Ann Sautter (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had a pair of hits and a run scored for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the third when Sautter reached on a one-out single, then scored on Loudermilt’s RBI double.
Pfeiffer answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, with Patterson providing the big blow, a two-run double to put the Falcons on top 3-1.
Wingate had the answer in the fifth, scoring three times to take the lead. Whitley got it started with an RBI single, making it a one-run game. Wortham followed by connecting on her second homer of the season and her career, a two-run shot to left to put the Bulldogs on top 4-3.
Paul shut down Pfeiffer in the final three innings to notch her second win of the day and 19th of the season. She allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. Senior right-hander
Melanie Conklin (Wellington, Ohio) took the loss, falling to 5-11. She allowed four runs on six hits in five innings of work.
Wingate returns to action Saturday, hosting Tusculum at 1 p.m.
