Bulldogs fall 8-3 at Brevard in series opener

Brevard, N.C.----The Brevard College Tornados pounded out 13 hits on Friday afternoon, defeating the visiting Bulldogs of Wingate University 8-3 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Tornados improve to 20-20 overall and 11-11 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 26-17 overall and 12-10 in the conference.
 
Senior infielder Randy O’Dell (Durham, N.C.) had a pair of doubles and three RBI to lead the Brevard attack. Freshman infielder Chad Funkhouser (Poquoson, Va.) also drove in three runs for the Tornados, while senior first baseman Tarron Robinson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was two-for-four with two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore outfielder Champ Stuart (Freeport, Bahamas) added two hits and two stolen bases, while scoring three runs.
 
Freshman outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was two-for-four with a double and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior infielder Chris Vazquez (Tyrone, Ga.) went two-for-three with a double and a run scored, while senior outfielder Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) was one-for-three with a double.
 
Spitz reached base to start the game, then went to third on a single from senior outfielder Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.). A sacrifice fly from redshirt junior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) put Wingate on top.
 
Brevard answered in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from Funkhouser. O’Dell’s sacrifice fly in the second put the Tornados on top 2-1.
 
Vazquez led off the third with a double, then scored on an RBI single from Spitz to tie it at two. Brevard once again had the answer in the bottom of the frame, taking a 4-2 lead on a two-run single from Funkhouser.
 
Robinson gave the Tornados a three-run lead with his RBI single in the fifth. He would score on an RBI double from O’Dell to make it 6-2.
 
Wingate cut the lead to three on an RBI double from Spitz in the seventh. O’Dell answered with another RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to push the advantage back to four. Brevard’s final run of the day was plated via an RBI single from Robinson in the eighth, making the final margin 8-3.
 
Freshman right-hander Tyler Lequire (Thomasville, N.C.) got the win for the Tornados, improving to 1-1 on the year. He allowed three unearned runs on six hits in eight innings of work, striking out three. Sophomore right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 5-3. He allowed five earned runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3innings of work, striking out two.
 
The two teams meet for a doubleheader Saturday, with game one starting at 12 p.m.
