Brevard, N.C.----The Brevard College Tornados plated 21 runs Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader over the visiting Bulldogs of Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. Brevard won the first game 14-6, while taking game two 7-6 to improve to 22-20 overall and 13-11 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 26-19 overall and 12-12 in the conference.
Game One: Brevard 14, Wingate 6
Champ Stuart had two RBI and three runs scored to lead the Brevard attack, while
Chad Funkhouser,
Tarron Robinson,
Cody Queen and
Christian Christopoulos drove in two runs apiece for the Tornados.
Senior infielder
Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) had a double and three RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Junior infielder
James Tedder (Clemmons, N.C.) had two RBI and a run scored, while senior outfielder
Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.) was two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.
The Tornados came out hot, plating six runs in the first inning. Robinson and
Randy O’Dell got it started with RBI singles, while Christopoulos added a two-run single to push the advantage to six. A Bulldog error allowed another run to score in the second, while a two-run single from Funkhouser gave Brevard a 10-0 lead in the third inning.
Stuart’s RBI triple in the fifth pushed the Brevard lead to 11, while an RBI double from Robinson and RBI single from Queen made it 14-0 in the fifth.
Wingate got on the board in the seventh on Karr’s RBI double. The Bulldogs added five more runs in the eighth. Allison got it started with an RBI single, while Tedder followed with a two-run single. A two-run single from Karr made the final margin 14-6.
Zach Joyce got the win, improving to 2-4. He allowed one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of work, striking out three. Senior right-hander
Justin Nygard (Wilson, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 3-4. He allowed eight earned runs on six hits in two innings of work, striking out two while walking six.
Game Two: Brevard 7, Wingate 6
Wingate fought back to tie the game at six in the top of the seventh on a three-run homer from Allison, but
Eric Renegar’s RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh won the game for Brevard.
Stuart drove in two more runs to lead the attack for the Tornados in game two, while
Kameron Armacost also drove in two runs. O’Dell added a pair of hits, an RBI and two runs scored.
Allison had a homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Senior outfielder
Dodson McPherson (Graham, N.C.) was three-for-four with a homer and two RBI, while freshman catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was two-for-four with an RBI.
Wingate took the lead in the first when McPherson singled, went to third on Clark’s single, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Tedder. McPherson connected on his 11th homer of the year in the fourth, a solo shot to make it 2-0.
Brevard scored four times in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. O’Dell got it started with an RBI double, while a two-run single from Armacost put the Tornados on top.
Allison drew a one-out walk in the sixth, then scored on Clark’s RBI single to make it 4-3. The Bulldogs would load the bases with one out in the frame, but were unable to plate any more runs.
The Tornados added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on Stuart’s two-run homer, making it 6-3.
The Bulldogs would not go away in the top of the seventh, getting two runners on via an error and hit batsman, bringing Allison to the plate. The senior connected on his 15th homer of the year, a three-run shot to left center to tie the game at six.
Brevard had the answer in the seventh, getting a leadoff single from O’Dell. Renegar would follow by ripping the game-winning walk-off triple to right center, giving the Tornados the 7-6 victory.
Dustin Haithcox got the win, improving to 1-0 on the year. He worked two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit. Redshirt junior right-hander
Josh Karr (Richmond, Va.) took the loss, falling to 2-1. He allowed a run on four hits in two-thirds of an inning, striking out two.
Wingate returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Catawba for a nonconference contest at 7 p.m.
