Bulldogs open SAC play Wednesday night against Catawba

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs return to the court in Cuddy Arena Wednesday night, opening up a 22-game conference schedule against Catawba College at 8 p.m. The Bulldogs are 0-1 on the season, while Catawba enters the contest 0-3 overall.

Wingate opened the season last Wednesday, dropping a tough 81-80 contest against Mount Olive. Junior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) poured in a career-high 35 points to lead the Wingate attack. The preseason All-SAC selection went 10-for-19 from the field, five-for-10 from three-point range and 10-for -11 from the free throw line, adding six rebounds.

Freshman forward Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) added 14 points for the Bulldogs in his collegiate debut, going five-for-seven from the field, adding four rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) had 12 points and six assists while freshman Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) pulled down a team-best eight rebounds. Senior forward Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) registered a team-best four blocks for the Bulldogs.

Wingate and Catawba met twice last season, with the Bulldogs winning both contests. Wingate closed the game on a 10-3 run in Salisbury to rally for a 64-62 win. Odell Turner had 15 points, nine rebounds and six steals, hitting the game-winning shot with two seconds remaining in regulation. Daye added 10 points and three assists for the Bulldogs. Wingate led by as many as 28 in the second half during last year's game in Cuddy Arena before winning by a final margin of 78-68. Senior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 19 points and six rebounds, going nine-for-nine from the field. Parker added 14 points for the Bulldogs, while Daye contributed 13 points.

The Indians are 0-3 on the season, dropping two of those contests by a combined eight points. Elon Edwards is leading the Catawba attack with 15.3 points per game. Troy Warren is contributing 13.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, while Chance Rucker is averaging 13.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest. Jalen Byrd is scoring 11.7 points per game, shooting 53.8 percent from three-point range.

Edwards scored 28 points in the season-opening four-point loss to Lees-McRae, while Warren piled up 26 points and 15 rebounds in the four-point loss to Pfeiffer. Byrd had 25 points in the loss to Belmont Abbey, while Warren collected 12 boards.

Wingate has won seven straight against Catawba. The last win for the Indians came in February of 2010, a two-point win in Cuddy Arena. Wednesday's game starts a streak of three SAC games in a seven-day span. Wingate travels to Tusculum Saturday for a 4 p.m. start. The Bulldogs host Lenoir-Rhyne next Tuesday.
