Bulldogs score early and often in 13-3 win over Kutztown

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored 11 runs in the first four innings Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 13-3 victory over visiting Kutztown University in the series finale of a three-game weekend series at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Bulldogs improve to 5-3 overall, while the Golden Bears fall to 1-2 on the season. 

Redshirt sophomore first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, N.C.) was two-for-three with a double, three RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore outfielder Michael Benitez (Miami, Fla.) was also two-for-three with three RBI and a run scored. Sophomore catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) had a homer, two RBI and two run scored, while sophomore outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) added two RBI and a run scored. Senior designated hitter Grant McCoury (Canton, Ohio) went two-for-three with an RBI and three runs scored. 

Kyle Stoudt was two-for-three with a double and two RBI to lead the Kutztown attack. Brandon Martinez was two-for-two with two runs scored, while Travis Kreitz went one-for-two with an RBI for the Golden Bears. 

Spitz started the bottom of the first with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, then scored on an RBI single from junior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.). Wingate scored four more runs in the second. Benitez plated the first two with a two-run single through the left side. Spitz lined a two-run single to right center to make it 5-0. 

Kutztown got on the board in the top of the third via an RBI double from Stoudt. 

The Bulldogs put up four more runs in the bottom of the frame. Cherry drove home the first two runs with a two-run single. Benitez followed with an RBI single to push the lead to eight. Sophomore infielder Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) drove home the ninth run of the day for the Bulldogs.  

Redshirt senior infielder Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) drew a one-out walk in the fourth, then scored when Clark connected on his first homer of the season, a two-run shot over the scoreboard in left to give the Bulldogs an 11-1 advantage. 

Kutztown cut the lead to eight in the fifth. Stoudt drove home the first run with an RBI single, while Kreitz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 11-3. 

Cherry ripped an RBI double off the fence in left in the seventh, pushing the advantage back to nine. An RBI single from McCoury in the eighth plated the game’s final run, making it 13-3. 

Junior right-hander Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, improving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed one earned run on six hits in six innings of work, striking out six. Senior right-hander Steven Chaffee (Greenville, S.C.) worked three innings of scoreless relief, striking out two. Brandon Shurr took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed nine runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings of work, striking out one while walking three. 

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, traveling to Limestone for a 2 p.m. start. Wingate returns home Wednesday, hosting North Greenville at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs begin conference on Friday, opening a three-game series at Catawba at 6 p.m.
