Bulldogs take two at Pfeiffer Sunday

Misenheimer, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs held on for a 2-1 victory in game one at Pfeiffer University Sunday afternoon in NCAA Division II softball action, while cruising to a five-inning 9-0 win over the Falcons in game two. The Bulldogs improve to 6-2 overall, while Pfeiffer falls to 3-5 on the season. 

Game One: Wingate 2, Pfeiffer 1

Sophomore infielder Brittany Owens (Greenville, N.C.) was two-for-two with a double, RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Freshman outfielder Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) was two-for-four with a double and an RBI for the Bulldogs. Sophomore shortstop Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) drew a pair of walks, while scoring a run. 

Julianna Bullington was one-for-three with an RBI to lead the Pfeiffer offense. Jaclyn Boever went one-for-three with a run scored. 

Burrell drew a leadoff walk in the second inning, then moved to second on a sacrifice. She scored on a two-out RBI single from Owens, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. 

Pfeiffer answered with a run in the bottom of the second. The Falcons loaded the bases, getting an RBI single from Bullington to tie it at one. 

The Bulldogs had a chance to regain the lead in the fifth, loading the bases with one out. Wingate had a runner thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice for the second out, while a line out ended the threat. 

Owens ripped a one-out double in the sixth, while Adams came through with a two-out RBI double to put Wingate back on top. 

Freshman right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) shut down the Falcons in the final two innings to get the win, improving to 2-2 on the season. She allowed one run on three hits in seven innings of work, striking out six while walking just one. Lindsey Russell took the loss, falling to 1-2. She allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings of work, striking out one while walking six. 

Game Two: Wingate 9, Pfeiffer 0

Senior outfielder Kelsey Maffucci (Rockledge, Fla.) and freshman catcher Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) each went two-for-three with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Senior outfielder Kasey Pendley (Marion, N.C.) and junior infielder Hayley Whitley (Monroe, N.C.) each went one-for-two with an RBI and a run scored, while Owens also had an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs. 

Maffucci got Wingate on the board in the top of the first, connecting on her first homer of the year, a solo shot down the right field line to make it 1-0. 

The Bulldogs added four runs in the third to push the lead to five. Maffucci plated the first run with an RBI single, while Laskey’s two-run double made it 4-0. Whitley added an RBI single to push the advantage to five. 

Wingate put up another four spot in the fifth to make it 9-0. Laskey got it started with her first career homer, a solo shot to left to make it 6-0. The Bulldogs would then load the bases, taking a seven-run lead when Owens drew a walk. Pendley followed with an RBI single, while Maffucci drew another bases-loaded walk to give the ‘Dogs a nine-run advantage. 

That would be plenty for sophomore right-hander Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.), who improved to 4-0 on the season. Paul tossed a one-hit shutout in five innings of work, striking out four while walking just one. Sam Jarmusch took the loss, falling to 2-2. She allowed six runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. 

The Bulldogs will play their next three doubleheaders at home, starting Wednesday when they  host Francis Marion at 1 p.m. Pfeiffer hosts Catawba Tuesday at 2 p.m.
