Box Score Gaffney, S.C.----The Limestone College Saints limited the Wingate offense to three hits Wednesday afternoon, registering a 4-1 victory over the visiting Bulldogs in NCAA Division II baseball action. The Saints improve to 6-3 overall, while Wingate falls to 5-4 on the season.
Josh Greene was two-for-four with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Limestone offense.
Avi Ahlzadeh was two-for-four with an RBI, while
Stephen Crowe went two-for-three with a triple and an RBI.
KJ McAllister added a pair of hits and a run scored for the Saints.
Junior outfielder
Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) was two-for-three with a double to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore infielder
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) went one-for-three with a double, while sophomore first baseman
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) drove home the lone run of the day for the Bulldogs.
McAllister led off the game with a bunt single, then scored on Greene’s two-run homer to left to give the Saints an early 2-0 lead.
Wingate answered with a run in the third. Sophomore catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) led off the inning with a walk, then went to third on Prince’s double. Clark would score on a sacrifice fly from Cherry to make it 2-1.
Wingate freshman right-hander
CJ Harris (Clover, S.C.) retired 14 in a row following the first inning homer. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Harris struck out
Michael Kelly, but the pitch got by Clark allowing Kelly to reach first. Crowe followed with an RBI triple down the right field line to push the lead back to two.
Greene led off the seventh with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on an RBI single from Ahlzadeh to make the final margin 4-1.
Josh Cesario got the win for the Saints, improving to 1-0 on the year. He allowed one run on three hits in 8 1/3 innings of work, striking out six and walking just one. Harris took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year. He allowed four runs on eight hits in eight innings of work, striking out four without walking a batter.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, hosting North Greenville at 3 p.m. Wingate opens conference play this weekend, traveling to Catawba to take on the third-ranked Indians in a three-game series, starting Friday at 6 p.m. Limestone hosts Anderson next Tuesday at 2 p.m.
