Nick Lomascolo tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings Friday night, out-dueling Wingate junior right-hander
Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.), who struck out a career-high 11 in seven innings of work. The third-ranked Indians prevailed 1-0, improving to 9-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Of Wingate’s five losses this season, four have been by one run.
Julio Zubillaga was two-for-four with a double and an RBI to lead the Catawba offense.
Ethan Satterfield went three-for-four with a run scored, while
Chris Dula added a pair of hits for the Indians.
Sophomore outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was two-for-four with a triple to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was two-for-three while also drawing a walk for the Bulldogs.
Wingate had a great chance to score in the top of the first when Spitz led off the game with a triple. Lomascolo struck out the next two batters, then following a walk, ended the inning with his third strikeout, stranding two runners.
Catawba also had a great chance in the first frame, getting back-to-back singles to start it. Currie struck out the next three hitters to end the threat. Dula led off the Catawba second with a single, then stole second. Currie got a strikeout and a flyout, while his fifth strikeout of the game ended the second inning.
Satterfield led off the sixth with a single, then went to second on a flyout. After a strikeout, Zubillaga delivered with an RBI double to right to get the Indians on the board.
Wingate had a great chance to tie it in the top of the seventh. Redshirt senior infielder
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) led off the frame with a walk, then went to third on a single from Clark. Lomascolo struck out the next hitter, then got an inning-ending double play to keep the Bulldogs off the board.
The Bulldogs had another great chance to score in the ninth, getting a leadoff single from junior outfielder
Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.), who went to third on another Clark single. Catawba reliever
John Tuttle retired the next hitter with a strikeout, but a walk would load the bases with two outs. The game ended on a flyout to right.
Lomascolo got the win, improving to 3-0 on the year. He struck out 10 while walking two, throwing 117 pitches while allowing just four hits. Currie took the tough loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed a run on eight hits, throwing 101 pitches on the night. Tuttle registered his first save of the year, working a scoreless ninth while striking out two. The Bulldogs stranded seven runners on base, while also hitting into a pair of double plays.
The two teams meet again Sunday, playing a doubleheader at 1 p.m. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, but has been moved back a day due to weather.
