Flying Fleet edge #30 Wingate 5-4 Monday afternoon

Wingate, N.C.----The Erskine College Flying Fleet won four of six singles matches Monday afternoon, defeating the 30th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs 5-4 in NCAA Division II women’s tennis action Monday afternoon. Erskine improves to 3-2 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 5-3 on the season.

Wingate won two of three matches in doubles action. Sophomore Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and senior Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) registered an 8-5 win in number two doubles. Sophomore Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) and senior Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) added an 8-5 win in number three doubles to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.
Sophomore Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) rallied after dropping the opening set 4-6 in number two singles, winning 6-3, 6-2 to register the victory. Ferguson added a 7-5, 7-6 win in number five singles for the Bulldogs. Williams battled back after a set one loss for a 6-2 set two victory at number four singles, but dropped the third set 6-4.  

Wingate returns to action Wednesday, traveling to Newberry for a 2:30 p.m. start.
