Limestone rallies for 12-4 win at Wingate

Wingate, N.C.----The Limestone College Saints scored six runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth Wednesday afternoon, winning 12-4 over host Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Saints improve to 9-4 overall while the Bulldogs fall to 9-8 on the season.

Chad Balderman had a homer and two RBI to lead the Limestone offense, while Cooper Gunter also homered for the Saints. Stephen Crowe, KJ McAllister and Julian Bridges drove in two runs each, while Avi Ahlzadeh went four-for-five with an RBI and two runs scored.

Redshirt senior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) and junior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) had an RBI and a run scored each to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore infielders Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) and Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) added two hits apiece.  

Wingate got on the board in the first on Yeung’s RBI double. He would score on an RBI single from Grant McCoury (Canton, Ohio) to make it 2-0. Prince ripped a one-out double in the second, then scored on an RBI groundout from Serra to make it 3-0.

Limestone got on the board in the fifth, scoring five runs. McAllister’s two-run double tied the game at three. Balderman connected on a two-run homer to make it 5-3, while Gunter’s solo homer gave the Saints a three-run lead.

An RBI single from sophomore first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) in the bottom of the frame made it 6-4. Limestone added six more runs in the sixth to take an eight-run lead. Crowe and Bridges provided the big hits in the inning, each connecting on two-run singles.

Matt Varanadoe got the win in relief, improving to 2-1. He allowed one run on three hits in two innings of work. Freshman right-hander CJ Harris (Clover, S.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-3. He allowed five runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings of work, striking out two.

Wingate returns to action Friday, opening a three-game SAC series against Newberry at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs and Wolves meet for a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
