Bulldogs take two from Chowan Wednesday

Wingate, N.C.----Four different Wingate pitchers combined to allow only two runs in 14 innings of action Wednesday afternoon, helping the Bulldogs sweep a doubleheader over the visiting Hawks of Chowan University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won the first game 12-2, while taking game two 4-0 to improve to 3-2 on the year. Chowan falls to 1-5 overall.

Game One: Wingate 12, Chowan 2

Sophomore infielder Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) was two-for-four with a double and four RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Redshirt senior infielder Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) went two-for-two with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was three-for-three with a double and three runs scored. Senior designated hitter Grant McCoury (Canton, Ohio) had a double, two RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore outfielder Will Sapp (Salisbury, N.C.) added a homer for the Bulldogs.

John Hunter had a double and an RBI to lead the Chowan offense. Josh Catalano was two-for-three with a double, while Austin Hall was one-for-two with an RBI for the Hawks.

Chowan took the lead in the top of the first via an RBI double from Hunter.

Wingate had the answer, scoring five times in the bottom of the frame. The ‘Dogs loaded the bases, with the first two runs scoring on a double from McCoury. Prince followed with a two-run single, while an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) made it 5-1.

An RBI single from Yeung in the second started a four-run inning. A two-run double from Prince made it 8-1, while a sacrifice fly from Godinez pushed the advantage to eight.

An RBI single from Hall in the top of the fifth made it 9-2. Sapp led off the bottom of the frame with his first career homer, a solo shot down the left field line to push the lead back to eight. Yeung followed three batters later with his first homer of the year, a two-run shot to left center to make the final margin 12-2.

Freshman right-hander CJ Harris (Clover, S.C.) got the win, improving to 1-0 on the year. He allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings of work, striking out three without walking a batter. Harris threw 64 pitches in his collegiate debut, 54 for strikes. Right-hander Kyle Brady (Cincinnati, Ohio) tossed two hitless innings in relief, striking out three. Ryan Moore took the loss for Chowan, falling to 0-2. He allowed nine runs on nine hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Game Two: Wingate 4, Chowan 0

Junior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Spitz was one-for-two with a run scored, while Prince added another RBI.

Moore and Brandon Mack each went two-for-three to lead the Chowan offense in game two.

Wingate plated a pair of runs in the first to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Spitz and Serra started the game with singles, while a one-out walk to McCoury loaded the bases. Spitz scored the first run on a wild pitch, while an RBI groundout from Prince made it 2-0.

A pair of singles and a hit batsman for Chowan in the top of the second loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman left-hander TJ Rinoski (Yorktown, Va.) struck out the next two batters, while inducing an inning-ending popout to get out of the jam.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the bottom of the frame to push the advantage to four. Serra plated the first run of the inning with an RBI single. With runners on first and third with two outs, Serra was caught in a rundown trying to steal second. He was tagged out, but not before Spitz was able to score from third, making it 4-0.

Chowan had another great chance to score in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs via two singles and a walk. Freshman right-hander Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) struck out the next two batters, while a groundout ended the inning, keeping the Hawks scoreless.

Rinoski got the win in his collegiate debut. He tossed five shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out seven and not walking a batter. Brown worked two scoreless innings in relief, striking out three. George Mazza took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in six innings of work, striking out four and walking two.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting Kutztown for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Wingate hosts Kutztown for a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
