Bulldogs and Cobras split doubleheader Saturday

Wingate, N.C.----The Coker College Cobras rallied for a 4-2 eight-inning victory over Wingate University in game one of an NCAA Division II softball doubleheader, while the Bulldogs rebounded for an 8-0 five-inning victory in game two. The Bulldogs move to 4-2 on the season, while Coker is now 1-1 overall.

Game One: Coker 4, Wingate 2 (8 innings)

Sarah Rountree drove in a pair of runs to lead the Coker offense, while Jaclin Poole and Krista Frazier added an RBI each for the Cobras.

Sophomore shortstop Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) was two-for-two with a double to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore first baseman Betsy Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and junior infielder Hayley Whitley (Monroe, N.C.) each drove in a run, while senior outfielder Kasey Pendley (Marion, N.C.) was two-for-three with a triple.

The Bulldogs struck first in the fourth. Freshman catcher Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) singled to lead off the inning, while pinch-runner Kaity Schultz (Pittsfield, Ill.) moved to second on a sacrifice, then stole third. She scored on a sacrifice fly from Whitley to make it 1-0.

That would be all of the scoring until the seventh. Sydney Weatherford got the Coker rally started with a one-out single. She would then move to third on a Wingate error. Weatherford scored the tying run on an RBI groundout from Poole.

The Cobras scored three times in the top of the eighth. Frazier drew a bases-loaded walk to put Coker on top 2-1. Rountree added the big hit in the inning, a two-run single to right center to push the lead to three.

Wingate cut the lead to two in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Braswell, making the final margin 4-2.

Lauren Phillips got the win for Coker, moving to 1-0 on the year. She allowed one earned run on seven hits in eight innings of work, striking out four. Freshman right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-2. She allowed two earned runs on five hits in eight innings of work, striking out seven.

Game Two: Wingate 8, Coker 0 (5 innings)

Freshman outfielder Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) was three-for-three with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Braswell added two hits, two RBI and a run scored, while Burrell had a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Whitley also had an RBI and two runs scored for the Bulldogs.

Wingate jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Adams led off the inning with a single, went to second on a sacrifice, then scored on an RBI single from Braswell. Laskey followed with a double, while Burrell’s triple to center plated two runs to make it 3-0. Whitley followed by driving home Burrell, while an RBI single from Pendley pushed the lead to five. Adams capped the scoring with an RBI single.

A two-out RBI single from Braswell in the third gave the Bulldogs a seven-run lead. Sophomore infielder Brittany Owens (Greenville, N.C.) added an RBI single in the fourth to make it 8-0.

Sophomore right-hander Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the win, improving to 3-0 on the year. She allowed just three hits in five innings of work, striking out four without walking a batter. Logan Cox took the loss, falling to 0-1. She allowed five earned runs on seven hits in two innings of work.

The Bulldogs are back in action Sunday, traveling to Pfeiffer for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Coker hosts Newberry Sunday at 1 p.m.
