Salisbury, N.C.----The 34th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs cruised past Catawba College Thursday afternoon, staying undefeated in SAC play with a 9-0 victory at Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference women’s tennis action. The Bulldogs improve to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Wingate has now won 21 of its last 22 league matches.

Wingate swept the doubles play Thursday afternoon. Junior Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) teamed with sophomore Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) for an 8-5 win at number one doubles. Senior Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) and junior Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) won 8-5 at number two doubles, while sophomore Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) and senior Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) registered an 8-5 win at number three doubles to put the ‘Dogs up 3-0 heading to singles play.

Evers rallied for a victory at number one singles, dropping the first set 3-6 while winning 6-3 in the second to force a tie-breaker, which she won 10-4. Thomas added a 7-6, 6-1 win at number two doubles for the Bulldogs, while Winston cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win at number three singles. Williams notched a 6-2, 6-2 victory in number four doubles. Ferguson won 6-2, 6-3 at number five doubles, while a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) win from Goreski at number six singles capped the sweep for the Bulldogs.

Wingate returns to action Saturday, traveling to Lincoln Memorial for an 11 a.m. start.
