Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University redshirt senior second baseman
Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) set the South Atlantic Conference career doubles record Saturday, lifting the Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep over Carson-Newman College at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won both games 5-3.
With the two victories, the Wingate Bulldogs (18-12 overall, 11-4 SAC) gain sole possession of first place in the SAC standings. The C-N Eagles (13-13 overall, 9-6 SAC) are one game behind Catawba (20-7 overall, 10-5 SAC) in third place.
Yeung blasted one double in each game to give him 73 career doubles. His teammate and current Wingate graduate assistant coach
Casey Allison held the previous record with 72. Yeung and the Bulldog offense benefitted from stellar pitching, as four Wingate hurlers combined to limit the Eagles to six hits on the day.
Game #1: Wingate 5, Carson-Newman 3
Yeung was four-for-five with a double and one RBI to lead the Bulldog offense. Five different Wingate players had one RBI as the hosts rapped out 16 hits against three C-N pitchers. Wingate junior outfielder
Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) supported Yeung’s efforts with three hits in five at-bats.
Wingate struck first with a single spot in the first inning. Serra doubled and moved to third on a C-N error. He scored on an RBI single by freshman outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.). The Bulldogs tallied four hits in the opening frame, but an Eagle double play and a Bulldog fly out helped the visitors escape further damage.
Carson-Newman took a 2-1 lead with one run each in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Eagle junior shortstop
Peter Rajkovich (Stockton, Calif.) started the inning with a walk. He moved to third on a groundout and a bunt single. Rajkovich scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman
Bo Ausmus (Jefferson City, Tenn.). C-N sophomore designated hitter
Evan Jurjevic (New Carlisle, Ind.) gave the visitors the 2-1 lead with a two-out solo home run in the fourth.
The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the fifth. With one out, Serra singled. One out later, the Wingate lead-off man stole second. Sophomore center fielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) plated Serra with an RBI double. Yeung followed with an RBI single through the left side to score Spitz.
Wingate pushed its lead to 4-2 in the sixth. With two outs, redshirt sophomore first baseman
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) doubled. Cherry scored on an RBI single by sophomore shortstop
Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.). The Bulldogs threatened to score again, but C-N junior reliever
Dustin Dunagan (Winder, Ga.) closed the door with the bases loaded.
The two teams traded runs in the seventh to settle the final margin. The Eagles scored an unearned run, while the Bulldogs benefitted from a Yeung double and an RBI single by redshirt senior designated hitter
Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.). Yeung’s double tied the SAC career record.
Wingate freshman left-hander
TJ Rinoski (Yorktown, Va.) remains undefeated by scattering three hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Rinoski (3-0 overall) gave up three runs (two earned), striking out three and walking four. C-N senior pitcher
Alex Britt (Salisbury, N.C.) took the loss. In 5 2/3 innings, the right-hander surrendered four earned runs on 13 hits. Britt (3-2 overall) struck out one and walked one.
Game #2: Wingate 5, Carson-Newman 3
Wingate scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for the SAC victory.
Sophomore third baseman
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) started the surge with a double off C-N junior reliever
Daniel Sharp (Johnson City, Tenn.). After Sharp walked Hunter on four pitches, Eagle senior reliever
Ryan Fillers (Greeneville, Tenn.) entered the fray.
Cherry greeted Fillers with a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up one base. Godinez followed with an RBI infield single to score Prince. Serra grounded out to the first baseman, moving Hunter to third and Godinez to second. Krebs stroked the game-winning, two-RBI double to left center two pitches later.
Carson-Newman got things started by scoring two unearned runs against Wingate junior starter
Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.) in the first inning. The Bulldogs got one back in the home half of the first when Serra walked and moved to third on two wild pitches. He scored on an RBI groundout by Spitz.
Wingate tied the game 2-2 in the fourth when Prince led off the inning with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Godinez. The Eagles regained the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI fielder’s choice by sophomore outfielder

Prince and Krebs had two hits each for the Bulldogs. Krebs and Godinez had two RBI each. Jurjevic and junior infielder
Trace Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) had one hit each for the C-N Eagles.
Wingate junior righty
Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) evened his record at 2-2 overall with the relief victory. In 1 2/3 innings, Vaughn did not allow a hit. He struck out four and walked none. Little gave up only one earned run in 5 1/3 innings. The East Mecklenburg product struck out four and walked two. Little surrendered one single and one double.
