‘Dogs rally for DH split; Wingate takes weekend series against Wolves

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two Saturday afternoon, registering a 6-5 victory to take two out of three games in a weekend series against Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Newberry won the first game 4-3. Wingate moves to 11-9 overall and 6-3 in the SAC, while the Wolves move to 12-8 overall and 5-2 in the conference.

Game one: Newberry 4, Wingate 3

Wesley Camp and Eric Barbieri had three hits apiece to lead the Newberry attack. Albert Baur had an RBI and a run scored for the Wolves, while Chas Goodwin was two-for-three with an RBI.

Redshirt sophomore first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) had a pair of triples to lead the Wingate attack, scoring a run while adding an RBI. Sophomore catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was two-for-three with a double, RBI and run scored, while junior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) added a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.

Newberry did most of its damage in the first, plating three runs on just two hits. Jermale Paige led off the game with a single, then went to second on a sacrifice and third on a flyout. He scored on a Wingate error to make it 1-0. After a single, Newberry drew three consecutive walks, forcing in a pair of runs to make it 3-0.

Wingate got on the board in the third. Cherry lined a one-out triple to left center. He would score on a sacrifice fly from sophomore infielder Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.).

A sacrifice fly from Baur in the sixth gave the Wolves a 4-1 advantage.

Clark drew a two-out walk in the sixth, then scored on Cherry’s RBI triple to left center. The Bulldogs got to within one in the eighth. Redshirt senior infielder Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) reached second on a one-out error. After a strikeout, Clark nearly tied the game when his line drive hit high off the fence in left field, plating Yeung to make it 4-3. Cherry followed with a line drive to left, but a leaping catch in left field was made by Camp to end the inning.

Jonathan Rosenberger got the win, improving to 3-0 on the year. He allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings of work, striking out eight. Matt Chapman worked the final two innings to notch his first save of the season, allowing a run on one hit. Junior right-hander Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 4-1. He allowed four runs (one earned) on 10 hits in six innings, striking out five and walking four. Junior right-hander Stephen Vaughan (Wilmington, N.C.) worked three scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

Game Two: Wingate 6, Newberry 5

Yeung was three-for-four with a double, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) added two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while freshman outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-four with a run. Cherry added another RBI for the Bulldogs.

Baur had two RBI and a run scored to lead the Newberry offense. Alex Kirby went two-for-three, while Barbieri added a pair of hits for the Wolves.

Newberry jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Paige led off the game with a double, then scored on Ryan Cramner’s RBI double. An error and a groundout helped the Wolves add another run to take a two-run advantage.

Wingate got on the board in the second. Yeung doubled to left center, then scored on Cherry’s RBI single to make it 2-1.

Newberry answered with two runs in the third. Baur drove home the first run with an RBI single, while an RBI groundout from Brandan Sheridan made it 4-1.

Wingate got back to within one with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Spitz plated the first run with an RBI sacrifice bunt on a squeeze play. Yeung followed with an RBI single to make it 4-3.

That would be all of the scoring until the top of the seventh, when an RBI groundout from Goodwin gave the Wolves a two-run lead heading to the final half inning.

Spitz ripped a one-out double to deep center, then scored on Yeung’s RBI single to make it a one-run game. Clark followed with a single, sending Yeung to second. He would score the game-tying run when Cherry reached on an error. Redshirt senior catcher Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) would then reach on a walk to load the bases. Prince would follow by drawing the game-winning bases-loaded walk, driving in the winning run for the second time in two nights.

Redshirt senior right-hander Joshua Karr (Richmond, Va.) got the win, improving to 2-1. He allowed one run on one hit in 1 2/3 innings of relief, striking out one while walking four. Freshman left-hander TJ Rinoski (Yorktown, Va.) allowed three earned runs on seven hit in 5 1/3 innings, striking out four. Wesley Camp took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed a run on one hit while walking two.

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, traveling to Mount Olive to take on the second-ranked Trojans at 4 p.m. Newberry travels to Benedict Tuesday for a 1 p.m. start.
