Box Score

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) tossed a five-hit shutout, while redshirt senior designated hitter Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) connected on a solo homer to lead the Bulldogs past visiting Brevard College 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday night at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Bulldogs win their ninth straight SAC game, improving to 24-13 overall and 15-4 in the SAC. Brevard falls to 12-24 overall and 7-12 in the conference.

Hunter was two-for-three on the night to lead the Wingate offense. Junior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) sophomore outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) and sophomore shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) added a hit each for Wingate.

Aaron Goforth was two-for-three to lead the Brevard offense. Eric Renegar was one-for-four with a double for the Tornados.

Hunter provided the offense on the night when he led off the fifth inning with his second homer of the year, a solo shot to right to give Wingate the 1-0 lead.

Currie was dominant on the night. He allowed only one extra-base hit, a two-out double to Renegar in the ninth. Of the five hits, three were infield singles. The first threat for the Tornados came in the sixth. Goforth lined a one-out single to left, then went to second on an infield single from Champ Stuart. A pair of flyouts got Currie out of the jam.

After a 1-2-3 seventh, Brevard threatened once again in the eighth. After a flyout and strikeout, Currie surrendered a single to Goforth, then walked Stuart to put two runners on base. Currie got out of that jam with a strikeout.

A flyout and strikeout retired the first two hitters in the top of the ninth. Renegar then connected on a two-out double to left center, but Currie struck out Kody Spencer looking to end the game.

Currie moves to 5-1 on the season, tossing his second consecutive nine-inning complete game. He struck out seven on the night, walking just one while lowering his season ERA to 3.45. Currie did not allow his first hit until an infield single in the fourth, while retiring Brevard in order in four of the nine innings. Brennan Daniels took the tough loss, falling to 1-5. He allowed a run on five hits in eight innings of work, striking out four while walking one.

The Bulldogs and Tornados meet for a doubleheader Saturday at Ron Christopher Stadium, with game one starting at 1 p.m.
