Bulldogs take two from Tornados to finish third straight SAC sweep

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs pushed their conference winning streak to 11 games on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader over visiting Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won the first game 13-4, while taking game two 4-1 to register its third straight conference sweep, improving to 26-13 overall and 17-4 in the SAC. Brevard falls to 12-26 overall and 7-14 in the conference.

Game One: Wingate 13, Brevard 4

Redshirt senior catcher Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) had two homers and five RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was three-for-five with a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Junior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) went two-for-four with three runs scored, while sophomore infielder Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) was two-for-four with an RBI and run scored.

Bennett Hixson was two-for-four with an RBI to lead the Brevard attack, while Matthew Proffitt was one-for-two with an RBI. Champ Stuart had a hit and two runs scored, while Eric Renegar added a double and run scored for the Tornados.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the first, getting singles from Serra and freshman outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) to start the game. Redshirt senior infielder Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) plated Serra with a sacrifice fly.

Wingate added five runs in the third. Spitz ripped a two-run double to left center to make it 3-0, while a sacrifice fly from Prince pushed the lead to four. Hunter's first homer of the day, a two-run shot to right, made it 6-0. Spitz added an RBI single in the fourth to give the 'Dogs a seven-run lead.

Brevard scored a pair of runs in the sixth to cut the lead to five. Hixson plated the first run with an RBI double, while an RBI single from Proffitt made it 7-2.

Wingate answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to push the lead back to seven. Spitz drove home the first run with an RBI single, while an RBI double from junior infielder Matthew Barrier (Mt. Pleasant, N.C.) made it 9-2.

Stuart led off the seventh with a single, then stole second. He would also steal third, then score on an error. Redshirt sophomore first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) led off the bottom of the inning with a double, then scored on an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) to make it 10-3.

The Bulldogs plated three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 10-run lead. Hunter provided the big blow of the inning, connecting on his fourth homer of the year, a three-run shot to right to make it 13-3.

Freshman left-hander TJ Rinoski (Yorktown, Va.) got the win, improving to 5-0. He allowed two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out three while walking three. Kevin Hamilton took the loss, falling to 5-3. He allowed seven runs (two earned) on seven hits in four innings of work, striking out three and walking one.

Game Two: Wingate 4, Brevard 1

Barrier was two-for-three with a homer to lead the Wingate offense. Spitz went two-for-three with two RBI and a run scored, while Serra was one-for-three with a run scored for the Bulldogs. Jay Schulte was one-for-three with an RBI to lead the Brevard attack. Cody Queen went two-for-two with a run scored for the Tornados.

Wingate did all of its damage in the third. Barrier got it started, leading off the frame with his second homer of the year, a solo shot to left center. Serra added a single, while Krebs was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on an error, while a two-run single from Spitz made it 3-0. Spitz would score on an error on the play, giving the 'Dogs a four-run lead.

Brevard's lone run came in the sixth. Queen led off the inning with a single, then went to second on Slade's single. He would score on an RBI single from Schulte to make the final score 4-1.

Junior right-hander Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, improving to 6-1. He allowed a run on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out three and walking just one to register his third complete game of the year. Little's league-best ERA now stands at 1.05, while the preseason All-SAC selection has gone at least six innings in seven of eight starts. Zach Joyce took the loss, falling to 1-3. He allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings of work, striking out one and walking one.

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, traveling to Belmont Abbey for a 3 p.m. start. Wingate returns to conference play next weekend, opening a three-game home series against Mars Hill Friday at 6 p.m.
