Augusta, Ga.----The Wingate University Bulldogs split a doubleheader at Augusta State University Monday afternoon in NCAA Division II softball action. Wingate won the first game 2-1, while the Jaguars took game two 3-0. The Bulldogs are now 14-7-1 overall, while the Jaguars move to 5-13 on the season.
Game one: Wingate 2, Augusta State 1
Freshman catcher
Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) drove in both runs in game one for the Bulldogs. Freshman outfielder
Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) was one-for-three with a run scored, while senior outfielder
Kelsey Maffucci (Rockledge, Fla.) went two-for-two.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the third. Wingate started the inning with back-to-back walks, while a Maffucci sacrifice moved the runners to second and third. Laskey delivered with a two-run single to right to put the ‘Dogs on top 2-0.
Augusta State plated a run in the fourth on an RBI single from
Laura Brown.
That would be all of the scoring from the Jaguars in game one. Freshman right-hander
Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) got the win, improving to 9-3 on the season. She allowed a run on seven hits in seven innings of work, striking out five.
Haley Birkle took the loss, falling to 1-7. She allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out four and walking five.
Game Two: Augusta State 3, Wingate 0
Lauren Yeargan and
Macy Terry drove in runs for the Jaguars in game two.
Hannah Vaughn was one-for-two with two runs scored, while
Brooke Stephens went two-for-three.
Sophomore shortstop
Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) and senior outfielder
Kasey Pendley (Marion, N.C.) had two hits each for the Bulldogs, while senior first baseman
Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) added a double for the Bulldogs.
The Jaguars got on the board in the second, scoring on Terry’s sacrifice fly. Yeargan added an RBI groundout in the third to make it 2-0. Augusta State took advantage of a Wingate error in the fourth to plate its third run of the game.
The Bulldogs had their chances, but stranded 10 base runners in game two. Singles from Pendley and Adams, followed by a Maffucci walk loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. A popout and a flyout ended the threat. In the seventh, a two-out error followed by a single from sophomore
Betsy Braswell (Rocky Mount, N.C.) brought the tying run to the plate, but a groundout finished the game.
Kristen Mills got the win, improving to 3-0. She tossed six shutout innings, allowing seven hits while registering a strikeout. Sophomore right-hander
Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) took the loss, falling to 5-4. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work, striking out four.
Wingate returns to action Wednesday, traveling to USC Aiken for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
