Bulldogs split doubleheader at #1 Mount Olive

Mount Olive, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored two runs in the seventh inning in game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader en route to an 8-7 victory over the top-ranked Trojans of Mount Olive College in NCAA Division II baseball action. Mount Olive won the second game 9-4. Wingate moves to 12-10 overall, while the Trojans are now 18-2 on the season.

Game One: Wingate 8, Mount Olive 7

Senior designated hitter Grant McCoury (Canton, Ohio) had a homer and four RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore infielder Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) was three-for-four with a double, RBI and a run scored. Redshirt senior infielder Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) went three-for-four with two runs scored, while freshman outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.

Wingate got on the board in the first, plating a pair of runs. Krebs got it started with a one-out single, while sophomore outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) followed with a single. Krebs scored when Yeung reached on a two-base error, while a McCoury sacrifice fly plated Spitz to make it 2-0.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the second. Prince started the inning with a single, then scored on an RBI double from junior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.). An RBI single from Krebs plated Serra to give the ‘Dogs a four-run lead.

The Trojans answered with three runs in the second. Zak Orrison drove home the first two runs with an RBI single, then scored via a passed ball and wild pitch to make it 4-3.

Mike Mercurio led off the third with a solo homer to tie the game at four. Mercurio added an RBI single in the fourth to give the Trojans a 5-4 advantage.

McCoury put the Bulldogs back on top in the fifth when he connected on his first homer as a Bulldog, a two-run shot to make it 6-5.

Jermaine Berry led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to tie it at six. Luke Berry added an RBI single to give Mount Olive a 7-6 advantage.

Yeung led off the seventh with a single, then went to third on a double from sophomore catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.). A sacrifice fly from McCoury tied the game at seven. Prince would then line a two-out RBI double to left to give the ‘Dogs an 8-7 advantage.

Right-hander Kyle Brady (Cincinnati, Ohio) shut down the Trojans in the seventh, registering a pair of strikeouts to secure the win. He pitched the final 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit, striking out three to move to 1-0 on the season. Talton Cherry took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed two runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Game Two: Mount Olive 9, Wingate 4

Spitz drove in a pair of runs for the Bulldogs in game two. Prince added a double and a run scored, while sophomore first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) was one-for-two with a run scored.

After the first two hitters in the first inning were retired, eight consecutive Trojans reached base, scoring six runs. Berry and Orrison drove home the first two runs with RBI singles, while a wild pitch plated the third run. Cody Britt added a two-run double, while the sixth run of the inning scored on a wild pitch.

Wingate answered with four runs in the second to cut the lead to two. Clark started the inning with a single, then went to third on a Prince double. A walk loaded the bases with no outs, while sophomore catcher Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) plated the first run by drawing a walk. A double play would drive home the second run of the inning, while a two-run single from Spitz made it 6-4.

Mount Olive pushed the lead to four with two runs in the third. Braden Reitano drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly, while a Mercurio sacrifice fly made it 8-4. A sacrifice fly from Geno Escalante added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make the final margin 9-4.

Collin Dubose got the win, improving to 2-0. He pitched the final six innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four. Freshman right-hander Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed four runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Wingate returns to action Friday, traveling to Lincoln Memorial for a 4 p.m. start. The Bulldogs and Railsplitters meet for a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
