Bulldogs and Railsplitters split Saturday doubleheader

Harrogate, Tenn.----The Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters registered a 13-inning victory over the visiting Bulldogs of Wingate University in game one of Saturday’s South Atlantic Conference doubleheader, prevailing 7-6 at Hennon Field. Wingate won the night cap 6-2. The Bulldogs move to 13-11 overall and 7-4 in the SAC, while LMU moves to 8-12 overall and 6-5 in the conference.

Game One: LMU 7, Wingate 6 (13 innings)

Sophomore infielder Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) was three-for-six with two RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Redshirt sophomore first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) added a homer while scoring three runs. Sophomore shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) had a homer and two RBI for the Bulldogs.

LMU got on the board in the first. Nick Pressley reached on a one-out single, stole second, went to third on a flyout. He scored on a Wingate error.

The Bulldogs answered with two in the second when Prince connected on a two-out, two-run double to left center to give Wingate a 2-1 lead.

Godinez led off the fifth with his first homer of the lead to make it 3-1. Sophomore outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) followed with a single, went to third on an RBI double redshirt senior infielder Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.), and scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to three.

LMU regained the lead with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run scored via a Wingate error, while a three-run double from Pressley gave the Railsplitters a 5-4 lead.

Wingate tied the game in the sixth when Cherry led off the frame with his third homer of the year to make it 5-5.

That would be all of the scoring until the 11th. Cherry reached on an error, then went to third on a single from Prince. He would score on a squeeze bunt from Godinez to give the ‘Dogs a 6-5 lead.

LMU answered in the bottom of the frame, with Cody Baker leading off the inning with a solo homer to make it 6-6.

The score would remain tied until the bottom of the 13th. A single followed by a pair of hit batsmen loaded the bases with no outs. Coker gave LMU a 7-6 win with an RBI single.

Josh Coker got the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed a run on two hits in four innings of work, striking out three. Redshirt senior right-hander Joshua Karr (Richmond, Va.) took the loss, falling to 2-2 on the year.

Game Two: Wingate 6, LMU 2

Yeung went three-for-four with two doubles and three RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Senior designated hitter Grant McCoury (Canton, Ohio) added a homer and two RBI, while sophomore outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) went three-for-four with a double and two runs scored. Clark went two-for-four with a homer.

LMU got on the board first in the third, taking a 1-0 lead on Pressley’s RBI groundout.

Wingate tied it with a run in the fourth. Spitz ripped a one-out double to left, then scored on Yeung’s RBI double to tie it at one.

A sacrifice fly from Nick Morabito gave LMU a 2-1 lead in the fourth.

Wingate tied it in the fifth when Clark led off the inning with a solo homer, making it 2-2.

The Bulldogs added four runs in the sixth to take a four-run advantage. Spitz and freshman outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) started the inning with singles, while Yeung’s two-run double put Wingate on top 4-2. McCoury followed with a two-run homer to push the lead to four.

Freshman left-hander TJ Rinoski (Yorktown, Va.) got the win, improving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed one earned run on three hits in seven innings of work, striking out two. Logan Sawyer took the loss, falling to 1-3. He allowed six runs on nine hits in five innings of work, striking out three.

The Bulldogs and Railsplitters meet for game three of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
