Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs committed two of their five errors in the 11th inning Tuesday night, falling 12-6 to the visiting Rams of Winston-Salem State University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Rams improve to 38-8 overall while Wingate falls to 29-21 on the season.
Brandon Harrison was two-for-four with a homer and four RBI to lead the Winston-Salem State offense. Travis Hickernell and Rafael Gonzalez added two RBI each, while Levi Grassley was two-for-five with three runs scored for the Rams.
Sophomore shortstop Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) was three-for-five with a double, RBI and run scored to lead the Wingate offense. Redshirt senior catcher Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) went three-for-four with a double and an RBI, while junior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) had two RBI and a run scored. Redshirt sophomore first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and senior designated hitter Grant McCoury (Canton, Ohio) had two hits apiece, combining to score three runs.
The Rams got on the board in the second on an RBI double from Hickernell. Harrison led off the third with a homer to give WSSU a 2-0 lead.
Wingate answered with five runs in the fourth to take the lead. Godinez drove home the first run with an RBI double down the right field line. Serra and Spitz would drive in runs by reaching on errors, while an RBI groundout from freshman outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) made it 4-2. Hunter added an RBI single to give the ‘Dogs a three-run lead.
A squeeze bunt down the first base line from Serra in the fifth plated Cherry, giving Wingate a 6-2 advantage.
The Rams tied the game in the eighth, scoring four runs without a hit. A pair of walks and an error plated the first run. An RBI groundout from Gonzalez made it 6-4, while another error made it a one-run game. An RBI groundout from Harrison tied the game at six.
That would be all of the scoring until the 11th. Winston-Salem State would score the game-winning run on a throwing error, with the Bulldogs trying to throw the runner out at home with the bases loaded. Two runs would score on the play, while a two-run double from Harrison capped the scoring to make the final margin 12-6.
Michael Drye got the win, improving to 4-2. He allowed just one hit in four innings, striking out six and walking one. Redshirt senior right-hander Joshua Karr (Richmond, Va.) took the loss, falling to 3-4. He allowed six unearned runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out one.
