‘Dogs plate 10 runs in first three innings, cruise past Lions for 12th straight SAC win

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the third inning Friday night en route to a 10-3 victory over visiting Mars Hill College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The first-place Bulldogs have now won 12 straight conference games, improving to 27-14 overall and 18-4 in the SAC. Mars Hill falls to 9-25 overall and 6-14 in the conference. 

Sophomore infielder Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) had a double and three RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Redshirt senior designated hitter Jason Hunter (West Chester, Pa.) was two-for-four with two RBI, while junior outfielder Eric Serra (Miami, Fla.) had a homer and three runs scored for the Bulldogs. Sophomore outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was two-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored, while freshman outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) went two-for-four with a double and two runs scored. 

Phillip Carroll was two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Mars Hill offense. Lorenzo Boden went one-for-one with an RBI, while Tommy Scala was one-for-two with a run scored. 

The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Scala reached on a two-out single, then went to second on an error. He scored on an RBI single from Carroll to give Mars Hill a 1-0 lead. 

The Bulldogs answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Serra got hit by a pitch to start the frame, then went to third on a single from Krebs. He scored on a wild pitch to tie it at one. Spitz followed with an RBI single, while a pair of walks would then load the bases. Prince cleared the bases with a three-run double to center to give the ‘Dogs a 5-1 lead. 

Wingate added three more runs in the second. The Bulldogs loaded the bases via three walks, while a walk to sophomore catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) pushed across the first run. Hunter followed with a two-run single to make it 8-1. 

Serra led off the third with a solo homer down the right field line, his fifth of the year. Krebs followed with a double, then scored on an RBI groundout from redshirt senior infielder Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) to give the Bulldogs a nine-run lead. 

An error, wild pitch and passed ball plated a Mars Hill run in the eighth. Boden added an RBI single in the ninth for the Lions to make the final margin 10-3. 

Junior right-hander Ben Currie (Clemmons, N.C.) got the win, improving to 6-1 on the year. He allowed an unearned run on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out eight without walking a batter. Currie has not allowed an earned run in his last 24 innings of work, while lowering his season ERA to 3.10. Zach Davies took the loss, falling to 1-3. He allowed six runs on three hits in an inning of work, striking out one while walking three. 

The Bulldogs and Lions meet for a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium. Wingate will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, with Senior Day ceremonies taking place at 12:30 p.m.
