Wingate, N.C.----The number 49 Wingate University women’s tennis team celebrated Senior Day with a 7-2 victory over Southeast Region opponent Mount Olive Sunday at the WU Tennis Complex. Fittingly, seniors
Kelli Ferguson (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Helen Goreski (Oakville, Ontario) won twice each for the Bulldogs (15-5 overall). Mount Olive is 9-6 overall.
“Today was an awesome atmosphere for college tennis,” Wingate head coach
Michael Cabana says. “We had a great crowd. Our team got off to a quick start with doubles…and kept the momentum going. Today was bittersweet…we are sending Kelli and Helen out into the world. I am glad we could send them out with a bang.”
Goreski topped Trojan freshman
Nicole Karas (Fort Morgan, Colo.) 6-3, 6-0 in the number six singles match. Ferguson defeated MOC freshman
Paulina Delgado (Guayaquil, Ecuador) 7-6 (0), 6-1 at the number five singles flight. Earlier in the day, both Goreski and Ferguson collected doubles points for the hosts.
Ferguson paired with junior
Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) to earn Wingate’s first point, an 8-3 number two doubles triumph over Mount Olive freshmen
Roxanne Chouinard (Quebec City, Quebec) and
Maite Belloso (San Sebastian, Spain). Goreski and sophomore
Tiffany Williams (Cary, N.C.) outlasted Delgado and MOC junior
Samara Paldinho (Maringa, Brazil) 9-7 at the number three doubles flight.
Williams and junior
Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) won two matches each. Williams defeated Belloso 7-5, 6-1 in the number four singles match. Evers teamed with sophomore
Becca Thomas (Alpharetta, Ga.) to edge senior
Molly Sue Lentini (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore
Francesca Ceppi (Caracas, Venezuela) 8-6 at the number one doubles position. Evers conquered Lentini 6-1, 6-0 in the number one singles match.
Winners of the last three South Atlantic Conference regular season championships, Wingate will host USC Aiken from the Peach Belt Conference Wednesday. The first serve for the Bulldogs and the Pacers is slated for 2:30 p.m.
