Patriots strike early for 7-3 victory over Bulldogs

Wingate, N.C.----The Francis Marion University Patriots scored six runs in the first two innings Tuesday night en route to a 7-3 victory over visiting Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action. The Patriots improve to 19-15 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 28-16 on the season.

Will Chandler was three-for-five with a double, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the FMU offense. Rhodes Dickerson added a double and an RBI for the Patriots, while Brett Fulmer was three-for-four with a run scored. Jarrod Reed went three-for-five with a run scored, while Isaac Davenport went two-for-three with a double, RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) was three-for-five with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore infielder Blake Prince was two-for-four with a double and an RBI, while freshman outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) added a double and a run scored for the Bulldogs.

Francis Marion plated three runs in the first inning. Michael Wilson got it started with an RBI single, while a two-run double from Dickerson made it 3-0.

Sophomore catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) started the second inning with a single. He would go on to score on an RBI groundout from redshirt sophomore first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) to make it 3-1.

The Patriots scored three more runs in the second to push the lead to five. Davenport plated the first run with an RBI double, while a two-run double from Chandler made it 6-1.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to three with two runs in the third. Spitz drove home the first run with an RBI single, then scored on an RBI single from Prince to make it 6-3.

A sacrifice fly from Casey Gebhardt in the sixth plated the final run of the day, giving the Patriots a 7-3 victory.

Daniel Barfield got the win in relief, improving to 1-0. He tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out four and walking one, allowing just two hits. Freshman right-hander CJ Harris (Clover, S.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-6. He allowed six runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings. Freshman right-hander Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) went four innings without allowing an earned run, striking out three. Redshirt senior right-hander Joshua Karr (Richmond, Va.) tossed  2 2/3 scoreless innings for the Bulldogs.

Wingate returns to action Friday, opening a three-game series at Tusculum. The first place Bulldogs enter their final SAC series with a one-game lead over Catawba in the league standings.
