Bulldogs pound out 13 hits; Houser dominates as Wingate downs Mount Olive 8-0 in five innings

Savannah, Ga.----Eight different Bulldogs had at least one hit Saturday afternoon, while seven different players scored at least a run as eighth-seeded Wingate University eliminated fifth-seeded Mount Olive College with an 8-0 victory in five innings on day two of the 2013 NCAA Southeast Regional softball tournament. Wingate improves to 33-21-1 overall, advancing to take on fourth-ranked Armstrong in an elimination game Saturday at 4 p.m. The Trojans are eliminated from the tournament, ending their season at 34-15 overall.

Junior designated player Kayla Saliga (Asheboro, N.C.) was two-for-two with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Wingate attack. Senior first baseman Brittany Loudermilt (Stony Point, N.C.) added two hits, two RBI and a run scored, while senior outfielder Kelsey Maffucci (Rockledge, Fla.) went two-for-three with two runs scored. Freshman outfielder Shannen Adams (Ayden, N.C.) was three-for-four with an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Wingate loaded the bases in the first but could not plate a run. The Bulldogs would get on the board in the second. Freshman infielder Emily Usiak (Matthews, N.C.) led off the frame with a single, went to second on a sacrifice, then scored on a two-out RBI single from Adams. Loudermilt added an RBI single to make it 2-0.

Sophomore shortstop Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) led off the third with a walk, then scored on an RBI double from Saliga to put Wingate on top by three.

Wingate plated five more runs in the fifth to end the game. Saliga got it started with another RBI double to make it 4-0. She would score on an error, while a double to right from Maffucci put runners on second and third with one out. Loudermilt drove home senior outfielder Kasey Pendley (Marion, N.C.) to make it 6-0. The final two runs of the game would score on Mount Olive errors to make the final margin 8-0.

Freshman right-hander Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) registered her eight shutout of the season, improving to 24-13 on the year. She allowed just three singles on the day, striking out four and walking one. Carly White took the loss, falling to 13-6 on the year. She allowed two runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings.
